Hi guy's,

I recently bought an old and tired bug and I want to give it a new live as a baja bug.
The car will be mainly used on the road with only some occasional light offroad use.
Some info on the car. It is build in 1968 and was first registred in '69. The engine is a '71, 1600 cc with single Solex 34PICT3 carb.
Presently the car is yellow but the original color was Royal Red.

Here is a picture.

I have been reading a lot of posts here but still have some basic questions.
I am goint to use a 7 piece baja kit. Not sure if its going to be the wide or narrow eyed version.
I like to get big wheels in the back with smaller, narrower tires up front. How big can I go with only the body modifications and leaving suspension and everything stock? If not, what do I need to change?
I know about the body lift which helps getting bigger tires but would prefer not to. Is there an easy way to get more ground clearence?

All your input will be greatly appreciated. Very Happy
Thanks.

The stock bug has awesome ground clearance already. Your trouble is approach and departure angle, hence the cutting of the front and rear sheetmetal and installation of the baja kit to keep it looking good and close to weather tight.

Bigger wheels/tires aren't always the best. Try to keep the overall height of the tires near the same if you're not going to beef up the engine or you'll find it much more sluggish and if you can reach it, a higher top speed.

I found snow/mud tires for the front of mine that are nearly the same height as stock, but wider and fits a mag wheel. Also the Rears I found Mud Terrain tires that were about 1 inch over the stock height. Combined with my Engle 110 cam, I have great low-end and still have power to have fun even though it's a 1600.

I don't know what's available to you, but good luck on your project.

ETA - BTW my grandpa made baja's by just trimming the fenders with a good sabre saw and metal cutting blade. You could always start there if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Thank for the info Conundrum,

I know bigger wheels will slow the car down but I really like the looks Cool and maybe I will upgrade the engine. Top speed is not important. I will look into your Engle 110 cam suggestion. What about changing the carb?
Any suggestions on tire size and rims (offset?).

It is personal choice on the size of tire you put on the car. With the baja kit on, coil over shocks (can be the cheep ones), and playing with the stock suspention i have put on everything from 31's to 35's on the back. But you do need the wide back rims. And I say a solid trans mount is a must. I would blow out nose cones like a fat kid blows out candles on a cake.

Not just a solid trans mount. The most important part of that is the strap over the forward part of the trans to keep it from tearing off the front mount. The trans nose casting will quickly break with more tire or more hp. The trans tries to do a wheelie and the stock mounts aren't enough to transfer that to the rest of the car. Not that a bug with a mild engine or bigger tires will actually pop wheelies, but the trans tries anyway.

On another note...That 69 Bug is mighty straight and clean to chop it into a Baja.Aren't there any other Bajas or junk Bugs around there?

There are a few bugs here but no Baja's. Some have been restored very nice.
Do you have any pictures of a strap over the foreward part of the trans because I'm not sure what you mean.
I started the easy part today; stripping the car. Will post pics this week.

Thanks for posting that WideOpen.

The strap kits come in two varieties.

One is as you see in the photo and the bolt can be welded directly to the top of the frame horn. Or the bolt can be a long one through holes drilled all the way through the frame horn,. But these can lead to a cracked frame horn. I like to weld a piece of 3/16" x 1-1/2" strap to the top and bottom of the frame horn to prevent cracking.

The second style of strap is one which clamps to the pinch weld flanges on the horns and has rubber padding for the trans case.

Here's what'll sound like when accelerating on the freeway. I'll get the exact tire size if you want it.

Front 205/70R15
Rear LT235/75R15

When I bought them, they were as close as I could get to a stock tire height to keep the gearing within reason and the speedo correct. The fronts are Snow tires and the rear are M/T's. I got them from Tirerack.com, but don't pay for mounting through them. Take them down to a local Tire place. I had to use starting fluid to set the beads. The shop could only get one tire to bead out of the 6 I was paying them to do. We settled and I got the better end of the deal, but just had to do it myself.

My trans is the original '66 6-volt ground out for the 12v flywheel, etc. so gears should be stock, whatever that is. 4th is definately not a gear to accelerate in if you're below your powerband.

Hi guy's,

What I thought would be the easy part (removing doors and fenders) turned out to be a real struggle! Boy, did those nuts and bolts put up a fight. Evil or Very Mad
It looked like they were fighting for their live which really was the case since most of them lost their heads in the process Crying or Very sad
As you can see from the pics the car has a lot of rust. Also the wiring harness looks a little different from stock.
Next step is removing the body.
Here are some pics, enjoy Wink
