I have been rebuilding the suspension on my VW . I am working outside next to the driveway.
There are not a lot of Air Cooled VW's in my area. Consequently quite a few people stop to look and make comments when they see me working on it. One guy said he had a basement full of parts collecting dust. I was able to purchase a Solex Carb. and a Bosch Dist. at a reasonable price.
So today a guy stops and tells me he just bought an engine from his neighbor that has been removed from a 1976 beetle. It has been sitting inside a barn for quite a few years. Said he bought it to resell on E-bay. He seems to be quite a wheeler/dealer. Wants to know if I would be interested in buying it. Everything is there including engine tin. I want to replace my chrome tin with stock. Also thought that maybe some other accessories may be worth something. Down the road I will put a rebuilt engine in and perhaps could use the case halves.
Please give me an idea as to what this engine assembly may be worth.
I have not seen it yet, but would obviously look it over before laying out some cash.
Thank you,
DD 1972

Here's my experience with engines: Most that have been sitting for more than just a year or so are pretty much junk. Moisture tends to build up inside the cylinders and rusts away. Besides that, most VWs that have been sitting for years have something wrong with them... That's why the started sitting in the first place. I would assume the engine is nothing better than a core. I'd personally give no more than $100 or maybe even $150 if it had something cool that you want on it (like an alternator or a Thing fan shroud, etc). Assume that you'll spend at least $400 getting it back in good shape by doing a valve job and replacing the P/C's, and hope the bottom end (crank, rods, etc.) is in good shape.

We'll see what everyone else thinks. That's my opinion, though....

Thanks 57 Baja,
I wouldn't even think of trying to run it. I would be interested only for parts.
Thought that perhaps some OEM stuff would be nice to get my hands on as a future investment. I think a new Bosch Alt. runs close to $200.00 if you can find one. And I do want to get hold of some OEM engine tin.
Thanks again. Hope I get a couple more responses.
Edit: Hey, you havn't told me how you got those photoes over here from Picassa yet!!

Like 57 said, if they sit for awhile they usually need going through. There are proper ways to store a motor without damage, but I have only seen a hadnfull of 100s of people do it right. If the motor is complete with alternator/carb/etc its worth $200, if it only had a generator its worth about $150, if there is no generator/alternator, carb, $75 -$100.

BE SURE TO CHECK THE ENDPLAY, If there is excessive endplay the case is probably junk and its pretty much worthless at that point.

I'm a mac guys so it may be just a hair different. I just drag the photo into its own window. Then I cut and paste the address (ie http;//blahblahblah.jpg) of the photo into the box where I'm typing right now to respond to you.

Put a (img) in front of the photo address and a (/img) behind it and you're G2G. Only, don't use these: () use these: [] with the img tags.

Make sense? Try it.

BTW, I didn't derail this thread, you asked!

Back to our regularly scheduled programming now.....

Agree with 57 and bugzyla. 200 tops unless it's got dual carbs on it, them maybe 300 if they look salvageable.

X2 if it was an FI case there is no provision for a fuel pump.

Thanks guys.
57 Baja, I know I asked. You didn't steal anything. Thank you for the Info. Not sure if I follow all of that but I will play around with it. I would like to be able to put some Pics. of my project up. I tried to make an Avitar with A Pic. of my Baja, but it said something about needing administrator approval.

Bugzyla, I know what you mean about proper preparation for storage.
I have a 409 GM and a 2.3 Ford in my garage both properly pickled for storage. I turn them over by hand every couple of months as well.
See you in about 8 weeks.

Fatalifeaten, Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

Perrib, I thought about the FI issue. Only because I was wanting to get my hands on a solex Carb. Thanks for the heads up on the fuel pump issue.
I have never even seen a FI aircooled VW. Did they make any carburetor models in 1976?

Got the ermergency brakes adjusted and bled the brakes today. Need the get the axles in. I thought I was going to get her off jack stands today. Then it rained. I guess if I would clean out the garage I wouldn't Have to work outside. Or move permanently to Arizona!

I don't have a picasa account but from what I understand from others is you should have a link to this photo option.

Thanks Perrib I will continue to experiment.
Update on the engine.
I could tell this guy was a character.Seems he was going to BUY the engine from a women that lives near him. He found out about it when he stopped at a garage sale she was having. Then sell to me for a fast buck. He had his sights on me because he would see me working on my Baja when he drove by. I really don't have a problem with that. He called me a couple of hours ago to tell me the engine was no longer available. That's when he came clean with the 'Rest of the story" Someone had offered her more money than he had offered. It was not FI ( according to him ). Also the woman lives less than a mile from me.
Oh well.
On the photos, I can get a link to post here. But 57 Baja actually made it so the photos came right up in the thread. I am working on that one!
