I'm not sure if some new VWs have a neutral saftey switch or a clutch switch.

It could Also be the Joe Blow who wired the car or the fact that the wire is 40 years old. VW are about 1/2 a step above a lawn mower. just rewire the thing (Starte rcircuit and/or Ignition or both) You can spend more time chasing down electrical stuff than it would take to rewire the entire car, trust me I know.

Hers is a quick and dirty 1 wire puch button starter circuit.

Starter button: 1 wire to ground other wire to back of car.
Buy a 30/40amp relay. (Ignore the writing in the picture)

Wire from starter button to Pin 85 on relay

Pin 86 on relay wire it to a the 12v side of the coil or a constant 12 volt source. if its to the 12v side of the coil the car will not crank with out the key being on. If it's the constant 12v source you can evan crank it with the key off. But the car will not start with out the key being on.

on my car I run a Loop jumper from Pin 86 to pin 87 for the 12v.

Run a 8 or 10 gauge wire from the big fat lug on your starter...The one that hooks to the battery Positve baattery cable...Make sure you remove the Positive battery cable at the battery to render you electrical sytem safe before you do this!!!! Run this wire to to pin 87 on the relay.

Last run pin 30 to the pin on the starter solenoid.

Also make sure you have good ground I run a ground strap from the chassis to the transaxle.

ezz pee zee

How this work is when you hit the starter button, it grounds the relay and then the relay activates. MAX! Voltage runs from Pin 87 to Pin 30 then to your starter solenoid and wam bam your car starts to crank...:)

I run the ground wire through the start circuit in my car alarm so the car will not crank if the car alarm is on. If I'm working on the car I can also start it from the back just by taking a 2nd wire to to pin 85 on the relay and ground it and crank the car from the rear just as if I was sitting in the front seat of the car..

I bolted the relay next to the starter and this is the best place for it. You have the 1 long wire from the button to the relay and every thing else is short wires.

Option 2: If you still use the key and I believe it sends 12v when it is put into start/crank. Run the wire from the key to pin 86 and then run a wire from pin 85 to ground. Also cut the loop wire as you will not need it (Loop wire pin 86 to 87) if you do not the car will keep cranking for ever and ever.

Both work.

I have had my autozone starter in the car for over 14 years before it boke Starter coil sweel so when it's hot it cranks slow like a chevy. Life time warrenty.

I ordered a new EXPENSIVE ($171) Selfsuporting Bosch starter and the solenoid sticks all the time. It sucks and have had to take it apart to unstick the solenoid twice now. Not life time waranty! I think i have used the new Bosch strter less the 15 times now and the solenoid is stuck again. SUCKS! Autozone starter used it over 14 years up to and over 5000 cranks or more.

The bad part autozone no longer has the selfsuporting starter that I need for my car or that is what I was told by the saleman. The cool part is autozone gave me a full refund on the starter for the price I paid for it 14 years ago $40 including taxes etc. So in reality I got to use a starter for free for 14 years.

In the end I think he was full of poop is I just looked the starter up on line and it shows it for $39.99

I think the only reason you were having trouble with that Autozone starter was because of the bad ground from the trans to the chassis Chris. Once I replaced that ground strap and put in another one of those Autozone starters it has been working awesome ever since. I think that one that you had in it got shorted because of the bad ground. On another note Eric, you are right. Autozone doesn't carry them anymore. But Checker does! They didn't have one at the first checker I went to, but the Super Checker or whatever it is on 19th Ave and Bell had a couple of them.

Oh cool. I stand corrected. We may be talking about a different starter though come to think of it. The starter that I have is a self supporting starter from a Porsche. Same one? When I checked a while back they said that none of the stores stocked it any more and they weren't even able to order it. I ended up paying 59.99 at Checker for the same one. I don't have the part number on me, but I can get it at home later. That part number you posted does sound awfully familiar though... Hmmm...

Also the same relay is used for KC lights etc. or if you feel real old skool. You can use a old Chrysler or Ford starter relay to.

I too use the Autozone starters, alternators, and generators, mainly because of the lifetime warranty. I have to say out of all of them I have bought from them I have only had 1 starter go bad.

A little secret about the bad rap checker and autozone electrical parts get, years ago there was a company called Champion Labs that manufactured these parts for both Checker and Autozone, these were pretty much cobbled and patched together, painted, and sold as rebuilt. Neither store stocks this brand anymore (mainly cuz they are out of business) and what they have now is a pretty good part for the buck, and its hard to beat the warranty.

Now dont get me wrong here, Bosch is a great part, but I have to wonder if they had to cut corners to keep their share of the electrical motor market?
