Well, my son Robert and I went on about an 80 mile run today in the mountains above Big Bear Lake. A jeep almost ran Robert off the road in the Squareback. The car stopped as the pan was laying on the dirt on the side of the road, and the driver's side tires were still touching. The passenger's side tires were only barely on soft sand, if they were even touching at all. I got Robert out of the car by standing on the rock slider I built for the driver's side. Then, he stood on the slider while I strapped it out with my truck. We could have easily lost both vehicles trying to strap it like we did. Thank heavens we got it out and everyone is unscathed.....

It's a helluva long way down that cliff.

Shocked YIKES! Shocked
Thank God no one was hurt or went over the cliff. I've noticed that you guys travel on some hairy terrain some times.

BTW, Baja Squared looks good!

Ooh, that sucks. Glad you're both ok (and the cars). What exactly happened that the "Jeep almost ran Robert off the road"? Was he going to fast or took the off-road mantra of "right of way to the uphill driver" a bit too seriously?

By the way, how'd that sweet cage and skid plate hold up? Very Happy

Kyle

Obviously, Robert is a rookie driver, being 15. From what I saw, the Jeep guy really didn't know what he was doing either. I was behind Rob in the truck, so I don't have the full low-down. My interpretation is that the Jeep came around the corner, and both drivers were caught totally off-guard. The Jeep didn't pull over far enough to allow a safe passage (as you can clearly see in the picture), and Robert smashed down on the brakes and over steered. Who knows what really happened, but that is what it looked like to me.

Nobody was hurt. That's all that matters.

I hope Robert (also the other driver), and someone who sees this post learned something from this.

I had a motorcycle come flying around a blind corner last year at Big Bear and almost (I'm talking inches!!!!) hit me. He went flying (literally) off the road into some bushes. He wasn't hurt either, but I guarantee you he doesn't do blind corners like that any longer!

My dad taught me to drive when I was 15, off-road before on-road, in a 1983 Jeep CJ-7. How scary do you think that was for the other people out there? Wink

im a pretty good moto rider and i was up here in cottonwood, o i would say about 2 years ago riding with some friends up in the hills here. i was leading and i was pretty far up 5th gear crusin on my 450, i looked back to see where they were and as soon as i looked back there was a jeep xj..i grabbed a handfull of front break and launched right over the jeep..bounced off the top and cant to a hault on my back...thank god i wear the right gear!! my bike however took a pretty good digger into the push bar of the jeep pretty much breaking all his lights on the front..not to mencion scaring the piss out of a middle aged couple with there 2 boys with them. i took full responsibility for the wreck, however they said they were caught off gaurd looking at the sceenery so it was a lesson learned for the both of us. i had to hang out there for a few min to regain my composure...took a big rock to my bars to make them true and finished the day out. lets just say it was a very very close call which could have killed me..

this thread is a good lesson to anyone who hasnt ran into trouble like this on the trails. thank god that your boy is ok and that you didnt have to loose that fancy new car you guys just finished haha....

the offroad gods were with you that day!

Exactly guys. We can all learn from this. I keep looking at that picture over and over and I can't help but think about the fact that there is a loving God up there watching over me and my family. It could have been real ugly. I'm very thankful that it wasn't!
