Hi,
I am new to this and i have done some research but it looks to simple.

I am looking to take one of these

and turn it into this

but suspension wise i am not sure what it will take.

from build threads on this site it seems like you use the stock suspension but just extend the shock towers and put in some bigger shocks..

That seems to easy?

It isnt easy.

1. the car pictured on top is a super beetle, not a good start to make the second pic.
2. If you want to build a car like the second pic, start with lots of $$$$$$$
that car has a full cage, wider beam, longer arms, custom shock towers built into the cage, fox or king shocks = $$$$

it's not that easy. The car you posted has coil overs, a widened beam, 4 inch longer than stock front arms. the beam is part of the cage for the entire car, and the car is now the entire framework for the car. there might not even be a stock pan left in that car as it could be a full tube chassis car (think sandrail with a baja body on it)

The rear of the car has 3x3s, (3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than a stock vw IRS setup. it most likely has coil overs as well which are mounted to the cage inside the car.

the cage plays a huge roll when building a baja, it strengthens the chassis, as well as provides a place for everything to mount to. notice the roof rack? it bolts through the roof to the roll cage.

the stock bug posted above is also a super beetle, extremely hard to convert to even a fairly mild baja due to the McPherson strut style suspension up front. might not be an issue if you plan to cut the front end off to to build it as wild as the baja pictured, but good luck finding a fiberglass kit for a super, not exactly the easiest to find.

if you have the abilities to build a car then by all means do it. it will take a lot of time and a lot of $$$ to get it to look like the baja you posted. if you don't build it your other option is to buy one that's already done. used bajas like the one above can be had for a fraction of the price of what it takes to build them.

Cubic dollars. Being a Super won't matter at that stage of conversion. You wont be using the front tunnel to support the front beam. Like stated above it will be supported by the cage. Nice thing about a super is the body is sealed which makes it nice to heat and cool. I would think about $20K to 30K minimum depending how much you can do your self and how well you can scrounge. If you building something less that needs the stock beam mount stick with a standard Beetle.

Ah... I now see that that car is tube chassis car...

Also the first image, i was just looking for a picture of a stock bug... (which is harder than you might imagine) i would get a pre 1970 probably a 68 or 69

Save yourself a lot of work and busted knuckles.

Start with this and build as you go. It will be cheaper and faster.
