Hey all, My name is Eric, and I just bought my first VW, a 1962 Bug from a guy I work with. It's a complete basket case so I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions when I start tearing into it. It's still in his garage, so I'll get pictures when I can but like I said it's a '62 with a '72 1600cc motor (although it's not installed right now.)

I'm down here in Southern Alabama with the Army but I'm originally from Arizona.

Thanks guys.

Thanks. I'm pretty excited about tearing into it. I've wanted a bug for a long time. I have to admit that it's a pretty daunting task when I look at everything that needs to get done to this thing.

On a car like that the 1st thing I do is get all the junk on the inside and move it to the outside.

You will feel so much better once you can sit inside the car.

I started cleaning it out this weekend. Just trying to see what's what. It kind of sucks because I don't have anywhere to keep it where I'm currently living so I'm keeping it in the garage of the guy I bought it from, but I have full access to it whenever I want to get at it. I'm leaving for Korea in January, so my goal is to at least get the engine rebuilt and get the bodywork done so I can get some paint on it. I'll feel pretty good about it once that is done.

The Floors need to be replaced on it, along with the quarter panel in the picture. The rest of the body is in pretty good shape minus some surface rust in spots.

Not sure what you mean by Dung it...Buff it...and Line it...

Looking ball joint to me int the front beam...how many CV joints do you have in the drive??? I was just talking about the floors and if you had found any good. Im questioning the year of the chassis that the 62 body is sitting on.

It is ball joints in the front. I don't know about the cv joints off the top of my head.

I actually discovered today that the V.I.N. is for a '67. The guy I bought it from got it for free from family and they told him it was a '62. He never really did any research to find out what year it really was.

Did a little more research today. It's definitely a '67 and according to the numbers, the motor is in fact a 1600cc from a '72 with heads from a '74. So it's a bit of a Frankenstein.

By this point in time when it's been over 30 years since the last Bug was sold new in the US, most all Bugs are pretty much Frankensteins now. There are some few all original Bugs, but their rarity makes them worth a lot of $$$. For a Baja which is actually intended to get used...a Frankenstein is a good thing.

So if the VIN number on the top of the tunnel just in front of the shifter linkage access plate under where the back seat goes starts with "117", then your pan is a 67. If it were a 62 pan, the number would start with "112". It was cool how VW did that all through the 60s.
