Post Post subject: General Manx Bug?VW/Baja questions

I am doing a basic build on Manx. 1959 pan with fiberglass tub. Needed lots and lots of luv when I got it. Close to trail and highway capable now. At this point I can finally see the glimmer of light from the end of the tunnel.

So here are the questions.
1-- Should a new fuel tank be coated on the inside before installing? I got a new 16 gallon one from MidAmerica

2--Will 5/16 steel brake line work OK for a fuel line? Put through the center tube already but it looks thin. Or should it get popped out and braided flex or something different be used instead? Have the center tube still opened up from the clutch tube replacement, so now is the time to change if needed.

3--Is there an easy way to make the Volvo/Empi brake fluid resevoir seal completely? Front will weep/leak the tank empty in a week just sitting

4--Does anyone know where locally to get the windshield replaced? AS1 glass of course. Should I just remove the glass and take to a local glass company? Local for me is Phoenix metro in AZ. I did call Safelight and they quoted me $240 to come to me and fix, but I can get a NEW frame AND glass for less online. Any recommendations?

I haven't run myself in the Intro forum yet or posted the build yet in the Build forum. But it will happen. Just been a lurker/reader of the forums so far during the early part of the build.

Thanks

Ray

Cleaning and painting the inside of the tank will save you big headaches down the road.

Call around on the glass the prices really vary. I had mine cut for my rail $120 with new gasket.

Try new seals on the resevoir.

Thanks Perrib wasn't sure on a new tank what is best. I assume POR is the way to go for the coating.

Will be calling multiple locals for the windshield then.

Got another tip on the master cylinder/tank. They asked if the master & tank were new or how old, I said new for each. Was advised to hold downward pressure on the top and rock it around 40-50 times in a circular motion to help fully seal. So I did that and also pulled out my computer maintenance toolkit grabbed 2 small needle nosed pliers and turned the seals while they were seated. Back is now completely dry and front is just barely moist visually. Can't tell any fluid level change from yesterday to today but if it persists will get new seals.

Ray

I don't see Tempe AZ as a place where the inside of the gas tank would have issues. In the Rust Belt...YES!. But in Arizona?????

I live in SoCal and my 58 Bug has over 800K miles and has lived in SoCal since it was imported new. I recently re-painted the outside of the original tank, but the inside is pristine bare steel.

There are gas tank sealers out there, but I wouldn't guarantee POR 15 for the inside of a gas tank. I've used gasoline to remove POR 15 from surfaces where it wasn't wanted.
