been wanting to build one of these for a while -followed a few build strings on-line for guidance and the previous owner had another project to start and made me a great offer- I knew I would need to upgrade some things to make it more off-road worthy. But nothing too rad; its to be a trail cruzer - a VW Family Truckster- The first trip out at Needle Rock, AZ

The previous owner did a lot to clean it up. repaint, new window door and body seals. I've cleaned up some wiring, lights, horn, wipers, stereo, etc... What I know about it- was built by a now-closed shop in Seattle area. Cut & boxed wheel wells, disc brakes all around, supposed to be a bus transaxel, dont know gearing. Has a 1776 engine, lightned & balanced flywheel, paper work with it says a V2-15 279X478 cam and dual Empi carbs. 31X10.50 tire all around.

Been working on getting thorugh emmissions - worked on it with a neighbor, running better, but he does not think it will make it. I'll have someone else take a look and need to upgrade the tie rods; bent one out at Hassyampa. more on plans later.

Your valves have to be adjusted, timing and dwell set properly and co set at idle and cruise to pass. With vehicles that have large tires and stock gearing I install stock size tires so the enine rpms match what rpms vs mph VW planned on for emissions testing. Also VW went to EFI because most of the time because of the short intakes with dual carbs on a T-3 cylinders #1 and 3 don't work well at idle making the HC high on those two cylinders.

Thanks for the feed-back. Yeah thats exactly what it looks like: two cylinders are not firing properly @ idle but do so @ higher RPM. -I'll try working on it more here, but I can see who knows way more about this than I...

Assuming that I can get it passed emissions... (hope) and looking to the tie rod problem. What would you reccomend reinforcing the existing (if I cn get it straight) or getting a set of new up-grades? Looks like $70 - 80 bucks a pop I can land after-marked t-rods... whats the best route?

Just sleeve the tie rods with 1 inch .120 wall tubing. Its an inexpensive and strong fix.

X 2 tubing is a few bucks a foot.

Then there is always swapping a stock beetle engine in for emissions.

Still have my Pinewood cars. I know I have 3 of them and still might have the 4th and 5th car. 2 cars that I might not have are not the best looking blocks of pine in the world, More than likly lost too time or the trashcan.

Both of my boys finished just outside of the top 3 in each of their dens and both had best times well within the top 10 of the pack -so are happy with a couple wins even though they didn't get top place. I made the mistake of showing them some of my old cars and the 1st place trophy I won one year, and they have been after me ever since to get them 1st place-!
