***IMPORTED FROM SOUTH KOREA*** "Waterloo" has become synonymous with the ultimate defeat, because in the most famous battle of the world, Napoleon, after he escaped from Elba, faced Britain's Duke of Wellington in his final gamble, and lost. This movie is a tremendous display of the talent and inventiveness of director Sergei Bondarchuk, and has made cinematic history by the sheer size of the production, and the special effects which were real, not computer-generated. Twenty thousand Russian soldiers played all three parts (French, British, and Prussian), with spectacular costumes and horses, in huge battle scenes of shocking proportions and action, in a battlefied reproduced faithfully by Bondarchuk. Wet fields were needed for the filming-he installed pipes underground that could be turned on and off, flooding the landscape as he needed it. Rod Steiger's performance is a tour-de-force of grandeur and emotion, and Christopher Plummer as the refined and snobbish Welligton is, of course, in his element. Orson Welles as the figurehead king of France Louis XVIII is simply a must-see. An important virtue of the film is that it has presented the events with much historical fidelity. DVD information: High quality Single Layer Anamorphic Widescreen [2.20 :1] and Dolby Surround sound, English and Russian language, with choice of English, Korean, or No subtitles.
