yep.. it is the nut that holds the rear wheel on... 99.9% of drivers were quoted saying "Jesus" just after the nut comes off. there is a cotter pin hole for something.

If driving and it comes loose you will feel some loose in the rear ... then some shaking ... followed by "Jesus!!!"

I have gotten to the shaking a few times and I was able to stop in time.

seems strange.... I had a few tires fly off my cars over the years... cant seem to remember if one of them had the drum on it...???

Ah... That makes a lot more sense. Definitely good to know before I find out the hard way.

I found out the hard way about 1988 I lost the left rear drum & wheel on my 57 oval with a single circuit brake system no brakes and a red light in front of me I made a right turn and nearly rolled the car I was thrown out of the car but walked away..jesus!!! indeed I always wore belts after that.

I known a few people that have rolled the car when they don't keep it straight when the wheel comes off. it seems to happen when the axel digs into ground when the car is turned... it is a fight to keep the car straight when the wheel comes off I know I have had a few front wheels come off and a few rear wheels come off... ask me why I don't let anyone tighten my lug nuts but me, no matter how smart I think they are. and I can remember two times that I forgot to tighten my lug nuts my self and had the wheel come off.

Question:

Why do bad things happen over 55mph??? it was kinda nice seeing my wheel passing other drivers on the HWY..

Well, still searching. Previous buy sold before I had a break in school to check it out. I'm sure I'll be back for more advice with another build as soon as another deal comes up. Til then I'm still learning as much as I can here and other forums and some manuals I ordered. Thanks everyone for the help so far.
