Found the forum in my search to educate myself on building a baja bug for a rec vehicle. Seems like there is a lot of resources here so I joined. Excited to be a part of the community.

Good project material?
Any suggestions?

It's got an automatic shifter, rwd, I'm assuming it's got an IRS type 1 transaxle, it does have a ball joint front end, 1600cc engine.

Let's hear what you would consider if this was an option you were entertaining...

I have always stayed away from Autosticks.. Weard.. not sure what it takes to convert it to a 4 speed.

Ya havent learned too much about them but there would definitely need to be a conversion. And I don't know if its worth it or not

the 4sp will fit..

I think the shifter will work.

will need both axles..

may need cluch tube installed.. (this is a pain in the butt)

The autostick trans is not a very reliable unit for offroading. At one time, B&M was modifying them into a pretty good piece, but they didn't sell well and the technology and parts have been lost to time. The center tunnel of the car does not have the clutch cable tube and as said above, it's a PITA to add one.

If you read my post in the college kid's thread, you'll see that I recommend buying a Baja Bug instead of starting from scratch.

Thanks for the help guys... I heeded daltons advice about the auto stick... I also think I would feel guilty with that particular vehicle. It was original chassis and original engine (numbers matched) and auto stick is somewhat rare? So I left it thinking that car has a different purpose.

And Mojave... I got your post and agree with you. I was searching for a baja bug relatively close to home and found nothing so I broadened the search and found that post. But i did find this project:

I am asking him about the front and rear suspension and the transaxle. Any pointers? My wife is halfway considering this one Smile Let me know if you guys have suggestions as before on specifics to consider. Thanks in advance.

Priced right... swing axle trans, king pin front end... good starter car. Make sure it is not all rotted out.

remember... this is a street car with big tires on it.. if you beat on it, it will break. but great for light off roading.

Right. Main focus is to get it in a comfortable condition mechanically then beef up over time. That's if we pursue it. Still waiting on pictures of interior and pan
