Thanks for sharing that! That guy is nuts, cracks me up how he gets the other cars out of his way. Doesn't do it with the trucks though? Why do they have them stop every once and a while for a quick second?

All best in the desert races have several "stop checks". It is just a part of off road racing.

A racer who desires to pass a car in front is supposed to honk his horn to let the front driver know that a faster car wants to pass. The front driver should move over as soon as he gets a reasonable chance. But with a helmet on, a radio speaker in the ears, the noise of the engine, the noise of the car slamming into bumps and sand gravel and rocks hitting the belly pan and such, it is VERY LOUD inside an offroad race car. So it can be tough to hear a horn honk. This Parker course would be considered a "freeway" to many offroad racers as so much is on graded roads and open, pretty flat sandwashes. And also because of it being a "freeway", it is relatively quite easy to pass. Still, where it is narrow and lacks room to pass, if the front driver does not get out of the way in what the passing driver considers a reasonable time, the passing driver is expected to physically bump the back of the slower car to make sure the slower driver gets the message. There is a vague gray area as to what is a reasonable 'Bump' and what is "Abusive". Basically, it's not cool to damage the other car. This "bump to pass" deal is a big part of why desert cars emphasize bumpers so much. When a buggy comes up behind a truck which has the better part of 3' of vertical suspension travel and a rear bumper which is chest high to a man when at rest, the front of a buggy with nearly 2' of vertical travel tends to get underneath the back of the truck. It's not good to have a 5-6,000lb truck slamming down on the hood of your 2,000lb buggy. You might note the difficulty the buggy had getting past that truck towards the end of the video. And the vertical movement of the back of that truck in the wash.

Checkpoints are there to make sure each racer takes the complete race course without short cuts or taking easier routes. At each stop check, the race car's number is noted by officials. Part of the reason for stopping is to give the officials enough time to be sure they get the number right for each car that passes. Years ago, each racer had an empty beer or soda can duct taped to the left a pillar of the roof or roll cage. At each check point, an official would stuff a ticket stub into the can. At the finish, the can would get cut off by officials and cut open, The tickets would be counted and the color verified to ensure each check point had been visited. If a ticket was missing, the racer was disqualified.

Thanks for the detailed info. I guess it makes since about not rear ending the larger trucks. I love racing but never got into baja, I think I might a bit more now. That video led to me sitting on YouTube for hours.
