G'day all. From sunny Australia. As you see by the subject I'm in the project stage of building a 1976 bus into a 4x4 v8 powered soft roader. due to the amount of pics & the slowness of photobucket I will load some tomorrow & a few each day as a progress proceeds. It's name is ECLETIC or IT"S at the same time I'm helping my son in law & daughter do their 74 bus up it will be powered by an EJ22 Subaru motor.
Now the build details for ECLECTIC go in this order from front to rear.
Mine is the white 1. The son in law & daughter are projecting theirs over the next 3 years
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE MODS
front spindle assemblies out of Holden rodeo these have had the ball joint holes resized to take the much larger VW taper & the upper camber nut
the lower arms are flipped & I have to spread the beams to accommodate the extra height of the spindle. I have been looking at the factory built bay 4x4 used as a test mule for the later t3 syncro & VW spread the beams as well so at least I have a few pics to work off. The front axle's consist of Commodore inner spigoted to rodeo outer section
these are different options for spindle set up decided on the ball joints in original place for ease
will be a combination of Mitsubishi L300 column & bevel box back to a Daewoo power steering rack. these racks are centre steer type so less work sorting bump steer

For transfer case Mitsubishi L300 stripped down to 1 cable simple back & forward movement

centre console yet to finished but using an aluminium checker plate toll box you see in pics what I did to make it work
To strengthen the floor & chassis I made up this frame that slides into the floor supports & sit's on top of the chassis rails & bolts to the floor
This is the cradle for the engine & transmissions. It will lift out as a complete unit thru the slider
The engine is a Rover v8 yet to decide if I'm going to run it injected or carby
I'm using a Davis Craig electric waterpump to save space on the front of the engine along with a remote oil filter & oil cooler. For a radiator 1 out of v8 commodore with the factory fans
The gearbox is Toyota Hi ace diesel 5 speed using Jeff Dellow bell housing & Mcleod concentric slave cylinder
The Dellow company manufacture a large range of conversion kit's this bell housing also suits the Toyota supra gearbox
The transfer case is 720 Nissan it is compact & strong enough to suit the job ahead
this is the combination of parts to join the transfer case to the gearbox it consists of Toyota slip yoke welded to machine bus gearbox drive flange & the bus axle machined & welded to the Nissan tailshaft flange

the front & rear differentials are from our Australian commodore the ratio is 3.08 with LSD in the rear
This a rough mock up of the front diff & axles allowing for the heater hose axles that are bent the stub are still VW set up to check axle clearance's
The rear axle & CV joints are standard VW bus with custom adapter's to bolt up to the diff flanges. Because of the width of the diff I had to make spacer's to go between the spring plate & the hub carrier 13mm thick by drilling 2 extra holes this has let me relocate the carrier down thus lifting the rear without touching the torsion bar setting from factory
This is the new location for the rear diff mount it will bolt up to the original gearbox mount on the vw bell housing much better than the one I made up to locate the diff originally.
The rear brakes are Mitsubishi pajero complete with the bus hub redrilled to 6 stud to suit jap pattern. The original VW stud holes will be filled with round bar & welded the machined to flat on disc side.
This a bolt up I will post as much as I can about this for anyone who can use it on their bus.
The parts involved in adapting brakes there is a spacer missing in pic will put it up when I take 1
the interior will be Honda prelude front seats a new dash facia housing with led digital gauges in the rear will be pajero rear seat & the flip up seats out of the very rear these will be mounted either side of the gearbox tunnel on a Hi ace rear bench seat base.
In the original engine bay will be a slide out BBQ attached to the original engine lid. With a small 12 fridge the under floor will be sealed with ally panels to keep everything clean.
For body protection & some where to sit the radiator will be a rodeo bulbar with matching tyre & bar assembly on the rear.

PS I have just recently sold off me baja it was a 68 model with an L18 Nissan motor in it
