Hey off roaders!!!!

Well it's that time of year again,, we survived another hot summer and with the temperatures starting to drop people are starting to make plans to get in some rideing in this year.. I went out for a day run last Saturday and found the trails very crowded, it's to be expected over a holiday weekend. But I had a wonderful time.. I called up Kenny yesterday and he is Jonesing and for dirt fix. We decided this year that the Crown King run will be held on the same date as the Crown King chili cookoff and once again Jim is come through and is going to allow us to camp outside his Cabin.. Those of you that hadn't been there before his cabin is located walking distance to downtown Crown King allowing us to participate in the chili cookoff without having to worry about parking or where to camp.. The last time that I participated in the chili cookoff the annual event was only in the single digits and not very big, Kenny participated in it last year and said that it was a real blast so let's give it a try this year. the launch point will be at the Wildhorse bar at 99th Ave. and Carefree Highway. Leaving at 8 AM October 5th.. If we run into a bunch of traffic on the hill we may need to detour and head up by Minnehaha Flats. The back way to crown King has become really tame. Most of the difficult parts now have bypasses last year we had two pretty much stock Baja's participate. Everybody made it with no major issues.. There is food and gas in town if needed. Kenny also said that if you're going to participate in the 29th annual chili cookoff you might want to bring along some Rolaids and the small fire extinguisher for your mouth.

For those of you that are attending this AVC annual event please drop me a note to let me know your comeing..

see Ya in the Dirt!

From: www.crownkingaz.com/ar...koff-2012/

Last years event:

The 28th Annual Chili Cookoff attracted 32 contestants that were hoping to be crowned “Number One” ! This year the honor of being the Number “1″ chili was bestowed upon Matt Chamberlain’s #2 “Brown Chili”. In addition to the notoriety, Matt also won $225 and a statue. Second Place went to Christine DeWitte’s #26 “Stumble In” chili. Christine went home with a big smile along with $175 & a statue. Third place winner, Vance Oswskey and his #28 “Spank the Bull” brought home $100 and a statue. The much coveted PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD, along with $200, was presented to Robyn Kenny for her # 27 “Woosey Green Chili”. The weather was perfect for this year’s chili cookoff. Thomas Oliver & Hotfoot kept the party rolling into the evening at the Saloon. As always, the cookoff was a success and the local businesses got a shot in the arm! Thanks to everyone who entered chilis, volunteered, judged and participated in the 2012 Cookoff. We hope everyone had a great time and will plan to visit Crown King again soon.

Will I clean the shop moved the Baja out and brought the rail back in,,,
I knew that I put the rail away "WET"... So I know I have a lot of prep work..
Fortunately this time before I put it away "WET" I left myself a note on the passenger seat of items that needed to be addressed.. Fortunately I have ordered all my replacement parts before hand and have them ready to be installed... My standard bumper-to-bumper checking every nut and bolt takes about 4 to 6 hours.. My electrical system shakedown takes two hours.. Checking in restocking my toolboxes and spare parts one hour... Since I parked my car ready for an overnighter... Most of that prep work is already been done and with the note that I left myself there's only one ammo can that I need to go through.. My dead rechargeable batteries I conveniently left on the passenger seat, one night of charging and I'll have him back in the car.. 15 minutes for a meal plan then two hours round-trip at the grocery store and I will be set.. Now we all know that these estimates are skewed that's why I'm starting my prep work early I'm probably going to find something that I don't like that's going to cost me a whole lot more than a want to spend and take a whole lot more time than I have... Seems to always be the case..(I still have some time to pull an all nighter for repairs) I'm going on year seven without breaking or cracking my frame so I anticipate my frame inspection to go quickly....

Kind of sounds like I am preping and for a race.. Well for some reason I don't like working on my car in the field..I follow a modified race prep... Most the time I make it home without seeing the wrong end of the tow rope... (Goes along with making a final prayer to the off-road God to let me make it home under my own power)..

Are those moog boxes? Whats in them? I have to agree prep is most of the reasons that breakdowns occur, and driving beyond your vehicals, or drivers limits are the other, not that I would know anything about that, just another excuse to go to your local parts store and catch up. But what you dont want is the guy behind the counter laugh and say wha'd ya break this time? By the way is it a bad thing that the parts guy don't ask for your pin because he knows it by heart then maybe its time to slow down, or buy heaver duty parts!I'm really hoping to invade Crown King this year, a town full of Bajas and rails too cool!plus a spot right behind the cook off campspots are a premium during the cook off and we'll have the best one in town!

The Moog boxes have my tie rod ends in them.. if I was going to replace them I might as well buy the best...

When it comes to brakes and steering it does not pay to cut costs.

Holy Moley there are only two more Saturdays until the run and six untill the Hassayempa run. This year I'm going to finish the poker run and do all the events I can they all looked like so much fun. But right now I'm down to just the rail, and still getting used to my new living arrangements. But I hope to see everybody up at Crown King though!

While the start of the season prep work went well this time. this is the time of the year that I do a thorough prep in anticipation of a good season, most my trip preps only take a couple of hours but once a year I really like to dig in deep and find a problem before it becomes critical... This year my biggest casualty was broken or missing zip ties it seemed like everyone that I pulled on snap due to heat rot.. Going through the front and I was surprised to find how little wear and tear my rack and pinion took I relocated the position of my RAM and went down to an 1 1/2" ram for quicker response.. I decided to shorten my tie rods by an inch and replace all of the brake line standoffs... My car is never handled as well as it is now with everything tightened up and ready to go I used about a half a tube of Greece on just the front end alone..
When I took my ride underneath the car I've noticed that my armor has taken a few more major hits when the weather gets better I plan on dropping my skid plates and beating them back into shape.. With Perri's trip to Boulder Mountain there is a big gaping hole in one of my skid plates that will probably need to be replaced...

now it a trip to the store and load up a change of clothes for cool weather. I've started conditioning myself for the chili cookoff ... I set my tongue on fire with gasoline and after 30 seconds tried to douse it with as much beer is I can handle,, just kidding! But I did make sure that the car had a fresh set of Rolaids and yogurt.... It looks like this year were going to have a good turnout if you plan on just coming up for the day get with Kenny for directions..

The trail is back rocky and rutted from all the recent rain. Was on it today in the Commander the trail on the private property very rough the hills have the holes back in them even on the bypass's lots of low gear climbing and rocks. The forest side past the cattle guard, ruts and rocky through the creek area. The climb out of Oro Bell still the same but once on top, ruts and dead falls on the trail. I would not want to take a stock Baja up that way. I would recommend good tires a must, this trail will kill old weak tires.

Excellent!!! Sounds like fun!! I was getting tired of running that road like a highway,,,

we always have a driver's meeting at 99th Ave. and carefree Highway.. If there's a lot of vehicles that can't make it we go up through Minnehaha flats or suggest that they go up the front way and meet us there...

Thanks for the heads up.. I just may throw together a private run and head up there this weekend..
