Hi everyone, my name is John, im 42 and live it vermont. I had just recenly picked up a 72 super beetle in pretty good shape and now I want to build a baja bug. Now, I know that everyone says they dont make a good baja bug at all because of the strut front end and it wont take the jumps but here in vermont, there are no dunes to jump in, just alot of mud and hill climbing so that is all,im going to be doing with it and also driveing it on the road as well. Right now its lowered, has a recent top end rebuilt 1600DP motor, all new brakes and hardlines. My plans are to cut the original metal fenders into baja fenders, raise the rear by cutting the extra notch in the torsion bar, raise the front by installing rear vw rabbit springs inside a new set of bug springs with a 2 in spacer and try to run a set of 31in tires, narrow ones in front and semi wide on the rear. If anybody has any ideas, and not he typical get rid of it and just get a standard, or cut the framehead and install a standard front end, not doing it, im also installing the heavey duty strut brace for the front struts as well, feel free to chime in with any ideas. Thanks

You posted in two places. Also views are Bots crawling the site.

Best of luck, unfortunately we have rougher terrain here and we opt for stronger builds, however I run a stock 66 Ball Joint beam which will most likely only last so much longer. It'll be a reason to upgrade, improve upon it when it begins to fail.

It has gotten me through many narly areas that I wouldn't even try alone. That's why I go with someone and have been towing it there so I can not only recover it with the 4x4 if absolutely needed but get to drive it home in nice Air Conditioning. Smile

Best of luck to you.

Just make sure to run a strut bar up front to support the strut towers.

Not the best choice for baja, but if it was cheap, go with it.

You have to use an external image hosting site. I use photobucket. Copy the Url and enclose it in img tags. Photobucket gives you a place to click on for BBCode and it copies it to the clipboard. Then right click and paste in a reply here. Hit Preview if you want to see it first. This site's a little slow so don't doubleclick submit or it'll double post.

Here you go. It's actually the code that says IMG on the right side...

If you Quote this message you can see the Code that produces it. Smile

It still looks pretty nice to cut up. You can't trade it for a Baja'd version locally? Putting wider tires on in the rear might contact the fenders. There's an awesome selection of tires available if you have deep pockets.

I'm not sure on your gearing, but you don't want to tall of a tire or you'll bog down really bad when taking off and you'll lose torque for going up steep hills, etc. Don't get Firestone Destination's. Mine are chunking out hard core. My other ones are dry rotting real bad.

Thats the thing here in vermont, I dont think I have ever seen a baja bug or I would see if I could make a trade. I really dont want to cut it but......... Its all I have unless someone on here would want to save it from being cut and trade me a baja, even if it needs a little work, I would do that. Im in a huge hesitation from even starting to cut the fenders right now just because of the shape it is in. PLEASE SAVE HER AND MAKE ME A TRADE????? Smile

Haha, yeah they're all over out here. Never considered your location and how many may be available.

I like the look of cut fender Baja's especially if you have the money for the right tires. If all you cut are fenders, replacements are easy enough to get so potentially if someone wanted to change it back they could.

My Grandpa went into a lot of places with his Baja, which was just a cut fender Bug and no fiberglass.
