Well, time to start the summertime upgrades. Hopefully this will kind of get my car closer to the “next level.”

When I did the mid season Mendeola Swap from the 002 we did not do it 100%. Some of the fixes will be to address that rush job.

On tap?
1. Rework the tranny. Currently fourth is too low, so we will be using it almost as an overdrive. I will use the first three for off road, then fourth for the road / highway. Bill @ Arizona Transaxle www.aztransaxle.com/ has promised me that warp speed will be reached w/ out the need for a flux capacitor. Should be able to pull it just fine with the new motor.
2. Relocate tranny reward. After my swap I ended up limiting my rear travel via straps. Time to fix that. I want my inches back!
3. Rebuild rear rack for spare. Again, after tranny swap, down and dirty was to get rid of holder. Time to put it back.
4. Install winch at front end. Opted for a Super Winch that should be 100% hidden by the front hood. www.superwinch.com/k/homepage
5. Ditch the K/N system and install a BTI Cyclone Ultra Filter System btiperformance.com/pro...C-1003.htm
6. Ditch the stock Honda power steering pump and opt for a Howe unit. www.howeperformance.co...-pumps.htm
7. Install a Hi Lift jack system. www.hi-lift.com/
8. Install a rear sway (anti sway for you tech freaks) bar
9. Ditch the Honda 3.0 and go for the Honda 3.5.
10. Install a Gibson 6 / 1 exhaust with real muffler. gibsonperformance.com/dev/index.php Trust me, as you get older loud pipes dopnt save lives, they just piss you off.
11. Install new LED brake lights and a dust light.
12. Install some miscellaneous billet / machined bits such as fuel filter, etc


Jason @ AZPConcepts www.azpconcepts.com/ has promised me that the rear end of my car will look better than a Kardashian’s ass and I will want to learn to dune backwards to show it off. He rocks and I can never say enough good things about him.


Have been collecting parts for the last few months and now IT’S TIME! What better place than by getting rid of the old? We started by pulling the motor. Seems like lots to do……

So this is part of the reason for the redo.

After buying the car we discovered a crack on the frame on the passenger side. That was repaired for the season. At that time we also discovered that the "torsion tube" was bent. It has a bow that may not show in pictures. We decided that we could likely run it for the season then redo it. Throw in a mid season tranny swap with some temporary mounts, etc and the whole rear is sort of buggered up. We also discovered a new crack at the left side of the car.


The trouble is the design of the tubes, and their intersections. The guy that originally built the car had a great vision, and generally good execution, but at this area it could have been done different. There are a total of 12 tubes that intersect with the torsion bar area. It is in some respects the lynch pin area to the whole car. To remedy the cracking issues and redo / repair this area effectively the entire rear end of the car will be cut off. Fuel tank - out. Radiator - out, entire rear cage assembly - tossed. Chop chop weld weld.

Nope, not forgotten or abandoned, just stalled out for a bit. We are back on track. Tranny is done. Come to find out I am hard on 2nd gear. So, new 2nd and 4th we should be back in business. 4th was elective, 2nd was precautionary.

Loaded up the car, a truck bed full of various parts and bits and off to AZP Concepts for a few week$ of love. Excited to see what Jason has in plan. He is tasked with fitting ten pounds of stuff in a five pound bag.

Looking forward to what he comes up with. All the faith in the world for him, so no worries there.

I asked him just for the big “reveal” he will take a few pictures along the way, but I want to be surprised, so I will just be kept in the dark until it is done. As invasive as the project is, there can’t possibly be any surprises. The whole back end from the cage back is being redone.

Here we go……





And its new home for a few weeks.

Almost there.

One of the challenges with this car is that unlike traditional baja’s this is a convertible. That eliminates the potential of roof rack, etc. So we had to figure a way to stick 10#’s of crap into a 5# space. Jason has done great in that regard. Look at the way the jack handle was mounted. Tucked inside the panels. We cut the high lift jack, but it is still enough to get the wheels off the ground, add in a few rocks and any jack bets the hell out of no jack.

Have to love a fab shop that has a sense of humor.


Short punch list left:

Skid plate
Axles / cv’s
Dzus tab at front.
Winch at front
On Board air at front
Bleed brakes and master
Resolve idle air issue.
Minor powder /jet coat that can wait a bit.

Where can I get the invisible CV's and half shafts? They seem to be a popular item on the car show rails and bugs too.

Mine were off being painted / clean CV's. But don't you just hate when cars at shows, etc that are not complete? Pet peeve of mine.

Yes,
I will not vote for a car that does not move under it's own power.
I will not vote for a car that has no blueing crome on the tail pipes.
I will not vote for a car that I can not see any soot in the tail pipe.

A car is a car and it must drive and move to be a car.

Final Project is done. Some minor wrap up, but, yes, for the most part done.

New motor: Pulls much stronger than the 3.0. Sort of hard to tell on the street how it will do in the dunes / dirt but should be much better. The 3.0 lacks torque. Glad we were able to salvage the intake as the tq was the goal. Very pleased. Car pretty much ran at or near 180 the whole time, so one concern was potential heating and that does not seem to be an issue. There really is no room to place a larger rad. The exhaust is much quieter until you get on it. At this point the fan is louder than the exhaust at idle, but you can still hear the radio. All is good with the motor.

Tranny: We turned the box into a 3 / w overdrive. Not a true over drive, but tall enough to cruise the highway. Works just great. All close ratio then the jump to 4th. 60 mph at 3k. Sufficient to cruise the highway if I am so inclined.

Power steering: The old Honda pump never kept up. New Howe pump with small pulley keeps up just fine. Can turn the fronts at idle in one place.

Sway bar: Good call. Need some more high speed corners, but for now it has met the goals. Car is very flat with no noticeable body roll. That on the street was a little freaky.

Misc crap: Still have to wire air compressor / winch. Have some idiot lights to hook up which will require pulling dash, so that means dash re-coat, etc. Not today. Filter should work great. Nice to have a jack on board as a spare with no jack is not much good.

Looks: Jason and Garrett at AZP Concepts knocked it out in my opinion and, well that is the only one that really matters. With the redesigned rear cage it looks much much better. We were building more for the desert than the dunes. That they could fit so much stuff into the car is amazing. Garrett was kind enough to tend to some minor touch up issues. (He is a good kid and the future of this game is well assured with kids like Jason and Garret involved.) It is very hard to be "true" to the underlying car of a convertible Bug and resist the temptation to cut this / chop that. Jason understands that concept and likely redid much more shit than I am aware of to keep that overriding desire in place.

The overall goal was to get the car to the "next level." Did that occur? I think so.

The list of new shit on the car is stupid long. Some by choice, some by necessity. Like any major project it grew. Over budget, over time, over it. Really need to spend some time with the car to get the joy back. Pretty tired of custom this, custom that. Fab time for a radiator hose? Pleazzzzeeee. 1.5 hours to install the battery? (I did it - it was legit time.) Again, Pleeeezzzeeee. Trying to decide what to do with the car, but we have already discussed next year's project. Any project will be easier than this one. Effectively we redid the whole back half of the car. Short of a full rebuild / roll repair I cant envision a larger project for this car.

Spent a lot of time at the shop doing what I could and really have a much greater appreciation for what goes into these cars. I think I got charged more on those days.

Took it out in the desert this AM and played a bit. WOW! Vtec kicks in at 4,000 or so and it pulls stupid hard. Great motor choice. Why? Cause by 4k rpm you have enough momentum so there shouldn’t be any real great shock to the tranny. Super excited about the new motor. Just had to go wind it out a bit.

Went ahead and did a quick photo shoot.

Again, simply can't say enough good things about Jason at AZP Concepts. Thanks to all that helped along the way, Brandon, Bill @ AZ Transaxles, Garret, Frank (FMYTH)

I hope that high lift jack is tall enough to lift your big tires with all that travel off the ground if need be. I found out the hard way that my jack lack a few inches of lift to get mine off the ground.
