Rumors started last year. their lease is up with the indian community. Charley Allen the curent manger/owner is out as of the 31st but rumor also says that the Indians just want him out. The latest is that NHRA is in talks to keep it running they even annouced that yesterday at the BOR.

It will all come down to projected revenue. Would a hotel/casino or shopping mall generate more money and jobs then the current motorsports facility?

Once again, we will have to wait and see.

things do look positive for it staying. They already entered into a long term lease with Bonderaunt, so i cant see them putting in a shopping mall or casino with the cars running around behind it.

Now available at the Bob Bondurant school of driving:

Stay and play packages- two days of driving instruction at the famous Bob Bondurant school of driving and two nights accommodations at the beautiful NEW BLA BLA BLA Hotel and Casino.

Package Price: $$$$$$$$

Then of course they could decide to keep everything the way it is?

Info I found on the net today:

2013) – There has been much speculation and rumor as to when and what will become of the drag strip at Firebird International Raceway. Arizona Auto Scene has been following the story closely and here’s the latest information we received today.

We previously reported that Mark Yacavone had booked the drag strip to run the Southwest Nostalgia Drags on April 13th, just one week after Firebird’s closing. Mark had been speaking with a leading member of the Gila River Indian Community and was led to believe the running of the Southwest Nostalgia Drags was indeed possible.

Today, Mark was contacted by a person who informed him that he has been hired by the Gila River Indian Community as the new president of the drag strip. Mark was asked not to reveal the name of the newly hired president as the Community will be making an announcement after April 6.

The new president, who has a history in promotions and managing a motorsports facility informed Mark that the Southwest Nostalgia Drags would have to be postponed as he did not know what equipment and resources would be in place at the track by April 13.

It appears the new track president will be on site sometime after the first week of April. Once the facility is up to speed with safety equipment and staff they will begin to book and run events at the drag strip. The Southwest Nostalgia Drags should be one of the first events to launch the opening of the new track.

We’d like to thank Mark Yacavone for sharing this news with us in a timely manner.

We hope to have more information for you in the first week of April.

I've followed it closely since I frequent the place. Now that Speedworld is closed until further notice it's even more imparative.

Charlie was basically running the place into the ground and the Indians wanted to renovate the place. It needed updates for sure and I had heard NHRA was a part of that. They basically want Charlie out, and a new person in. Looks like now they have found that person.

I never believed it would close from the start of the rumors since Bondurant is a big part of that facility that brings in revenue, and he had mentioned staying from the get go, along with Lucas Oil also wanting to contribute since they are a big part of the boat racing and other things that go on.

The schedule of things appears to continue through May from what I've seen. However the Firebird website ran by Charlie is not updated as such and should be ignored. Charlie has no reason to update it since he's getting the boot and I'm sure there is some anamosity there. There was even commercials on TV this weekend touting that Firebird was closing and this was the last event blah blah, not sure who exactly was behind that but it's not really true. It's likely the name will change but the facility will run as usual.

Steve Barkack is now moving his Pontiac Heaven event to Firebird (since Speedworld is closed) and that event is on the schedule and is a definate go for May 3-5. That same weekend is also the diesel drags, an Fbody shootout, and muscle car drags (all of which I love to participate in) so it's a full weekend.
I have heard the Nostalgia drags are being moved to Firebird as well (previously held at Speedworld) but the date has been moved around and is not nailed down yet as dirtjunkie already mentioned, another event I love to participate in.

I'm glad to see Firebird step up and make room for some of these cool old time events that only Speedworld had previously. I'm looking forward to it.
They'll stay open, so for those of you worried, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Thanks for the info. Good to see venues still around since it seems so many are closing (speedworld)....

Latest info form The Gila River web site:
Officially, Firebird International Raceway saw its final checkered flag March 30. But the Sun Valley Marina Corp., a tribal company that leases the raceway and the surrounding land from GRIC, fully intends to continue operating the raceway—just as soon as the company can break out from an unforeseen pit stop.

When Sun Valley chose not to extend its 30-year sublease with Firebird president and owner Charlie Allen because of unfavorable terms, Sun Valley’s board of directors expected to maintain continuity and financial productivity immediately by signing the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving to a one-year agreement. Bondurant had already been operating as a sub-tenant under Allen for 23 years and with Allen out as a middleman, rent revenue going back to the Community would increase 500 percent.

The ink was still drying on the Bondurant deal when the Sun Valley board was told it was invalid. At a Feb. 14 special meeting with the Economic Development Standing Committee, which oversees many tribal business entities including Sun Valley, a 1980 resolution was cited which canceled Sun Valley’s authority to make leases for less than a year without EDSC’s approval.

EDSC then called for the Sun Valley board members—President Harlan Bohnee, Treasurer Pamela Pratt Morago and Secretary Cheryl Coppedge—to resign by Feb. 27. When they did not, EDSC sent a recommendation for the board to be removed at the next Community Council meeting on March 6.

In the interim, Sun Valley presented at district meetings in D1, D3, D4 and D5 and rallied support from some Community members and when March 6 came, the vote to remove the Sun Valley board was never held and the issue was dispensed.

But business has still stalled because under the 1980 resolution the company cannot make lease agreements without EDSC’s approval. A new amendment to Sun Valley’s master lease with GRIC would enhance Sun Valley’s authority to negotiate leases up to five years. The amendment was on the agenda of the March 27 EDSC meeting, but that meeting was canceled because there was no quorum. The next committee meeting is April 10.

“We’re in limbo because the lease on Firebird is going to expire before we even get to the committee now,” Morago said. The lease with Firebird ends April 6.

Bondurant events scheduled for April have been canceled until further notice. Sun Valley cannot hold any races until it buys safety equipment, and it can’t get a loan to buy the equipment until it can sign leases with tenants.

Once the smoke clears, Sun Valley has major development plans to complement the racing infrastructure that already exists. It hopes to host at least 150 events a year. Future development projects potentially in the works include a theme park, water park and a movie theater.

The Sun Valley Marina Corp. charter was approved in 1970. The property comprising Firebird and the surrounding area was recently valued at $20 million, said Arthur Felder, a consultant to Sun Valley. Eighty-three allotted landowners own about one fourth of the land.

Council appoints Sun Valley board members for lifetime terms. The master lease between Sun Valley and GRIC expires in 2019.

Well isn't that just peachy. With Diesel drags, the Fbody shootout, Pontiac Heaven, and Muscle Car Sunday all happening May 3-5, and being so close to the end of April, I can't help but wonder if more events will be rescheduled if they don't get this straightened out. Because this gives the impression this might be drawn out for a while.
