So i just bought my first 1970 bug. I am going to turrn it into a baja bug as soon as i get the motor running but i cant decide what kind of internals i want. I would like to see if a stock 1600cc motor is enough to just play arround with while im saving up for suspension and such. So what i im wondering is if id be good having a stock motor until im completly done with the exterior, then building a nice motor, or should i just penny up and buy all the nice internals now? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to AZBaja!

You'd be surprised how reliable and where a stock VW engine can take you.

That said, it's really all about what you want from it. I've always geared myself towards making it reliable and focus on drivetrain and not on what the Baja looks like so much. Yeah people may laugh and point, but when it gets the job done and it's a blast to drive, I have the last laugh. LOL

Good luck and keep us posted!

A baja with a good suspension and reliable 1600 will beat a stock suspension and a built motor all day in the rough stuff. It will also be more comfortable and you will have less driver fatigue.

I think we'd agree on that, at least for your first Baja. You can always gather parts while enjoying it and then swap over a bad ass engine/trans later when you have it ready to go in.

Yes the stock engine with 235 75 r 15 or wider but not taller tires. Budget build in order:
drivers side suspension seat, weld up all the seams and all the little free tricks in the building Bajas and Buggies book. (3 rib bus transaxle, for 30 or 31 " tires), type 2 or 930 cvs notch the spring plates for more travel but not stiffer just to get droop. Fox shocks (if you want to go fast), 1776 engine built stock with cb cheater cam and Zenith or 34 pict carb.
