So i have my first volkswagen, a 1973 NON super beetle. So far I have not done much to it except strip it down to bare interior and removed all fenders. pulled the gas tank, re-ran fuel line. all new brakes / wheel bearings. cut the rear end and front end, just enough to get my current baja kit on it, i have had it all mounted up but removed them in order to primer. then i realized i dont want just some running junker, this is my first car, so instead i am going to take my time on it and drive some beater around to work and what not. i am a total noob to the volkswagen thing, yet at the same time have some pretty big plans for the bug. i would appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction i could start. Thanks!

Well welcome Avery.

Any fresh metal.....bedline.
You got to believe that those fumes are worth more then just a headache. lol
So what are your actual intentions with your 73 and how deep into a build do you wanna get????? Aswell as $$$.
This should be you be kept realistic to your budget so that there's another one on the road. You can build as you go,,,but always stay within reason.

Im going to guess that Everyone, not just me wants to see some pics, aswell as the plans that you have instored for your Mexi Bug.

Enjoy the build and always think forward.

thank you! so, since im on a budget considering im 17 and strapped for cash, what would a good starting point be? since i have already stripped down the bug, i was thinking my next step would be to pull the body off so i can weld new pans in since they are getting pretty thin, i want to be on the safe side. then after that i figured as i have extra cash to pretty much rebuild the suspension of the car until it is all dang near brand new. but my only problem is, i want to be able to put 31'' tires on it. i have an adjustable front beam, i am considering getting a different one. and for the rear to fit 31s all i have to do is drop the spring plates? correct? or am i not looking deep enough into the project to realize its not that easy?

When you say bedline any bare metal, you are referring to my trunk, engine bay, and interior? or what areas do you recommend?

As far as my plans for the bug go, i want a "Mexi Bug" LMAO that i can drive on the road to go wherever i wanna go play that day. but not a daily driver. like i said im happy with 31 inch tires.

I will have to post pictures when i get home from work this evening. Thank you guys for dealin with my rookie questions. Lol.

Well Kreed
I typically bedline any bare metal. If im finished with that welding that part, happy with that cut or trim and grind ill typically apply 3 coats.
If its still a WIP and dont plan on getting to it right away ill only apply a single coat to keep it unexposed from this nasty Oregon weather.
Wire brush it off, prep, and weld. Then reapply with 3.
As far as running 31s.....Id go 21 3/4 torsions and new spring plates.
That should give you the clearance for 31s if you have high riding fenders.
If you start notching the plate you will start getting into more of a build that will need to accomidate a steeper axle angle, which will involves changing out you drive flanges, cv bearings, and stub axles to T2 or 930 constant velocity bearings.
And more than likely will also involve shock mount relocation.
Have fun with it and always remember to think ahead.

I stone gaurded my pans instead of bedliner, but any covering on bare metal is a good start. Fix the pans, turn the torsions slightly or go to bigger trailing arms (mine has stock arms on it) I fit 30x10.50 tsl radials on the rear and have never had a rub issue.
