I have a 71 Bug building it up as a street/dirt Baja. It has the standard T-1 transaxel (IRS). I want to install the 3x3 arms. The order form ask if I have the type 1 or the type 2. Is it worth it to install the type 2 in a street bug for a teenager (Grandsons first car). He will get it in about 1 year. I have it stripped down to the bare frame installed new floor pans both sides, disc brakes are on the front but waiting on the transmixer choice before I do the rear, and now would be the ideal time to insall a type 2 if it is worth the trouble. And how much trouble is it! Already has 1835 engine and I have no doubt it will be flogged pretty regular when he gets it. Any comments? Question

Thought I knew a lot about Bugs, but I realize I dont know squat anymore about them. They have come a LONG ways from the early 70's when I played with them.

Speed costs money...How fast do you want to go?

An 1835 can eat a stock T1 gear box pretty quick. Especially in the enthusiastic hands of a teenager. Even an expensive built for racing T1 gearbox. (the voice of experience here). A wrecking yard 002 Bus IRS is stronger than a built T1. A race or "Sand" prepped 002 is stronger still. 091 is still stronger and you can keep going with this until you're up in the $30,000 range. That would be WAYYY over the top for you and your grandson.

One of the biggest drawbacks I see for a 002 installation is that if you use the EMPI style "Bus In A Bug" mount kit (No - I'm NOT ragging on EMPI here), the rear shelf needs a BIG hole for the front of the trans and the shift linkage. The alternative is a "10 Degree" mount kit, which sets the nose of the trans down lower and the shifter shaft inside the tunnel. I prefer a mid-mount plate for the trans with tabs on the top of the yokes. There are mid-mount plates designed to be fit between the main trans case and the front bearing housing , which requires machining the thickness of the plate from the trans case. But there are also external mid-mount plates which fit on the upper studs. No machining involved for this, but longer studs are required. Some cars still need a little extra clearance for the nose of the gearbox (hammer) and they all need the inner weld flange trimmed off the yokes.I like to weld 16ga 1020 steel sheet on the inner sides of the yokes after trimming the flange off.

Thanks for the response. I guess I will track down a 091 tranny for this project. I take it from your respose that the 10 degree is the neater way to go and it is far stonger than the T-1. Does anyone make an installation kit for this 10 degree installation that you know of or is this a home brew project? Mounting the trans at 10 degree does that pose any problems with the engine being tilted? Grandson and I are BOTH learing on this with the help of everyone on this sight and supply houses that I have delt with. I decided that V.W. stands for Very Willing to Help. I can not thank the members of this sight enough for the help. Very Happy

There is a version of this mount which has the ears for mounting to tabs welded to the frame horns high on the sides for a "10 degree" setup rather than this which is for yokes made of tubing. I just can't find it real quick. the Pacific Customs page seems to suggest one would weld this bracket directly to the frame, but that is really the way. the ears get drilled for mounting bolts to bolt it to tabs welded to the frame.


I saw pics of an installed 10* kit tonite, but can't seem to find it now.

The mid mount is plenty strong ever since I broke my nose cone I left the bolts out of the front mount out and are just using my homemade midmount. Next time I'm rubber mounting I hit something hard enough to break the nose cone. If they could of given a bit It would not of broke.

Make sure to have your 091 setup for your specific usage. Let your transmission builder know your engine size and the size tire you will running on the rear of the car. Stock gearing on the bus trans may not work for your application.
