I'm new to the vw scene, just picked up my fist bright red 67 baja a few weeks ago.
I've spent some time working on cars, but am definitely not a mechanic.
I love the car. The previous owner built a 1915 for it and put less than 1k miles on it. I'm not sure about too many of the internals, but I do know its got a balanced Scat cam, and dual Dellorto 40 carbs.
I hope to use this thing as a daily driver with the ocasional camping or fishing trip.

A few days ago I went to leave work and could not get the thing to shift while the engine was running. Everything was fine in neutral, but if I tired to put it in any gear I'd just hear a wining sound and could not get the shifter to move in place (I did not use excess force). When I attempted reverse all I got were grinding sounds. Also, the pedal was very light. It took almost no force to push the clutch. Since I had just replaced the clutch pedal hook, I assumed the clutch cable had gone bad(I've read that if one goes, the other soon will). I quickly replaced the cable and still had the same issues, so I decided to take a look at the clutch.

Today, after an hour and a half battle I managed to pull the engine and found the T/O bearing cross shaft arms to be bent way out. And the little clips that hold the bearing in place were resting at the bottom of the bell housing.
Seems I finally found the problem.

I don't think I'll have any trouble replacing the T/O bearing cross shaft, but I want to know if there is anything else I should take the time to replace while I've already got the engine out? I was planning on replacing the throttle cable already, but I don't know if theres any other maintenance needs that i just might as well do while everything is apart?

I don't know much about clutches, do I need to replace my TO bearing? it seems fine, rolls very smoothly. It does not just pop apart to be repacked, is there a way to re-grease it so i don't have to replace it?

And since the clips that hold it in were found just laying at the bottom of the bell housing, I have no idea how they are suposed to secure the bearing in place.....does anyone have a diagram or picture?

www.cbperformance.com/...uctID=1480 is what i was planning to use for a replacement T/O bearing cross shaft. Does anybody know of a stronger one? I got my 'heavy duty' clutch hook form CB Performance and was not really impressed this its 'heavy dutyness'.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but any advice would really be appreciated. I have pics of the T/Obearing, clutch and tranny if that would be helpful for anybody.
I will also throw up a few pics of my bug when the sun is out.

Thanks in advance for your help

I would definitely replace the bearing and the clips. If you have the eallier style bearing without the support sleeve bolted to the bell housing that the bearing slides on, the clips you get should be the type which the wire makes more than a complete circle. They slip into the hole on the side of the bearing, and with some cursing and conniving (I use a pair of Channelock pliers to hook the clips on the arms). Make sure the hooked end of the clips go up into the notch on the back side of the arms and the bearing fits into the big notch on the side of the arm facing you. I presume you have the early style as the later style has clips built into the bearing.
