my winter project for this year is going to be to increase the HP in my baja somehow. what would be the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to do that? turbo? larger displacement? i would like to go with a bigger bore, but i'd rather not have to machine my heads and case. ideas people! thanks

Might help to tell us what you're setup presently is- engine size, carburetion, trans setup and tire size might be useful info as well...

74' super. all stock motor 34-pict carb. not sure of tire size but they're not too much taller than originals off it

A good tune up is where Id start. Your looking at a stock dp engine, more than likely with an non-counterweighted crank. Thats gonna limit power slightly. How are you looking to gain power? Shave and mildly port the heads for better flow, go to dual 34's on a stock engine. Add in a mild cam and a header, and it would be decent. Honestly if your just looking for bolt on power, go with dual 34's and a header. Non-countered engines can run good, but its easy to overbuild them. Ive seen a bad example that involved a stock dp with a 7k rev limiter box, a mid-range cam, and dual carbs.

Simple thing to do is what was mentioned above. Tune up, dual 34 pic carbs and a little head work. If it were me and even on tight budget I would put a stroker crank and a cam upgrade in it if I were to split the case. If you were thinking about going bigger then you have already committed to doing some machine work. Assuming that you have a good dual relief case then the price difference in P&L (piston and liners) sizes in minmal If any. I have always liked a 2180 (82X92) lots of lowend torque and great relyibilty. You can build one with your stock heads and a single 44 weber. It's a great setup, besides if you want to upgrade it from there its as simple as a set of 044 heads and an additional 44 weber and you have a whole new animal with out needing to split the case again. Just my .02
By the way sometimes it's easier to find a new to you case and start from scratch. I assume that you still have to emissions it? let just say that there are some of us here that have wild beasts for motors that will no way in hell pass an emissions test. We there for have stock 1600 that end up on our cars every year or two around emissions time. Wink I have heard anyway.
