so i was talking to my best friends significant others father, who was a fabricator for walker evans many moons ago and a few other companies and his thing is custom chassis, whether its street or dirt, he was telling me widen my linkpin axle, stretch it forward as far as i can, run with stock torsions and 3x3 arms with good shocks,(front and rear) and it should be a hell of a ride, he builds many 1600 cars and 1400 trucks and an occasional unlimited. so souynd right?

Sounds right but wide isn't always that necessary. Suspension travel is only a number. It's all in the shock tuning. Will a properly tuned wider suspension baja perform better than properly tuned stock length and width baja, yes. But it's all in tuning. Don't expect a perfect car just by slapping on suspension. There's more to having a great performing car than just moving the beam forward and Putting 3x3s on

widening the front end isn't going to do anything for gaining more travel unless you put longer arms on it. it's only making the car wider, which can be good at high speeds, but bad on tight technical sections/trails. adjusters is definitely the way to go, but you don't necessarily have to build one wider. and a foot is a lot to widen one. most go 6-8 inches

A foot is a lot for a basic baja beam. Like James said, 6-8 inches is going to work well with 3x3s. I have a 10 over beam in my Fasty, but im also running 10" wide wheels in the rear and 5" wide wheels in the front. Both front and rear wheels are minimal backspacing. Pushing the beam forward will do it some good, but if you are going to do that you are going to want to do a full cage first. 4-6 inches is about the max I would go. I went 6 forward on the Fasty.

basically yes. the benefit to a longer shock is that it has more volume, which means it doesn't heat up as fast. when the shock gets too hot it leads to fading, which will cause the shock to lose its dampening abilities, and thus a harsher, and sometimes dangerous/exciting ride.

with a longer shock, you open up the door to the possibilities of longer travel, but aren't going to gain travel just with longer shocks. longer shocks are necessary in order to gain travel though once you upgrade to longer arms

Before you do anything you need to establish your need. By saying that I mean will you be out on the weekend cruising on some trails or running hard through the open desert? One that is established you can then set your car up accordingly. Cruising trails does not require a lot of travel. However, if you are going the high speed route I would suggest looking at several other cars and talking to their owners. See what works and what doesn't.

Only after that can you make a plan and move forward. One word of advice is invest in good shocks. Fox, King etc . . . The last thing you need is an out of control suspension setup. You can go fast in the rough stuff without a properly setup suspension.

well, thats my thing is i have some local 4x4 trails which arent too crazy a couple river crossings and stuff but my baja will be running out in the desert since i ride dirt bikes desert trips will be funner for my fiance who doesnt ride and hates riding on the back through the dersert 5th gear pinned so she'll be able to cruise the baja with my sister or my buddys fiance, travel is an important thing to me since i cant drive 55 on pavement or trail, i got a few ideas it looks like ill convert the front end to A arms and the rear to 3x3s.
