Make sure your master set is an Elring made in German as it will come with the good oil cooler and pushrod tube seals.

thanks for the info, I'm almost positive that its swing axle rear with ball joint front.

From the pics we can see its an IRS rear / ball joint front. Looks like a fun Project. Good luck and Welcome to AZBAJA!

In the photo above it appears that you have IRS rear suspension and a late single side plate gearbox which came from VW with a 3.88:1 differential ratio.

tore into the motor last night and just as I expected, the rings were broke all to hell in cyl #4, they fell into bout 20 pieces when I pulled the piston out... My big bore kit came in last week so all I need now is gasket kit to throw it back together. Checked with autozone earlier and they can get what they refer to it as "a head gasket kit", it's $25 and from what I can tell it only comes with 1 side, sound right?

well finally some progress finally!! FINALLY got all my parts in and have started assembling. I ended up going ahead and buying a set of rod bearings while I already had it apart. Hoping to have it all together by end of this weekend and try to get a little trail time on it. I ended up going with just 85.5mm pistons/cylinders for now, but I did find a deal on a set of DP heads with manifolds to use a single solex carb & bought a complete BJ front end with EVERYTHING. It came with ball joints, good tie rods & TR ends, 5 lug wheels/tires, steering stabilizer & even shocks for a $100. And the best part was that the rust is minimal on the new front end I bought, shock mounts have no rust (unlike the ones on the buggy currently) Bought a 6 gallon spun aluminum fuel tank, a set of tires & extra set of polished aluminum rear wheels, set of fiberglass seats. Now really just looking for a set of harnesses an electric fuel pump and a bus tranny, I'm hoping that I'm spending money in all the right places!!

well it's been a little while since updating this thread and I'm planning on taking pics of how it sits now, I've been pretty busy to say the least here lately with it!! I bought some aluminum wheels for the rear and got a set of 31x15.5x15 Terra tires cheap but not a lot of life left on them. Swapped out my wore out 4 lug front end for a wide 5 complete front end in better shape, re-done all of the wiring and made a stainless overhead switch panel for ignition, lights and horn. I bought a 3 rib bus tranny a month or so back and just now got it in and going. So to make a long story short a few of us went on a ride yesterday afternoon and I was psyched to try out the new tranny and it done great for 2 hours or so and well hopefully someone reading this can help me diagnose the problem that's occured. I was in 1st gear crossing a creek and clutched it to shift into 2nd and it wouldn't go in. shifter rod feels all out of wack but has all new bushing and the piece that attaches near the nose cone. it's stuck in 1st gear but by looking at the placement of the shifter it looks to be in 2nd gear. One of the guys I was riding with said he had it happen to him one time and it was a pin in the nosecone assembly or something that has a tendency to fall out and the way he explained it, it's what attaches to the shifter rod. Is this a common problem and how exactly can I go about fixing it? I'm pulling the motor/tranny in the morning so that I can get a better look and so I can pull nosecone cover off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Before you pull parts disconnect the shift rod and leave the coupler attached to the transmission and see if you can get the gears.

I just loosened the mounts and slid the motor/tranny back enough where I could remove nose cone and sure enough I got lucky enough that the pin on the inside had slid out. Whew!!! Thank god!!

well just when I thought I had solved my transmission issue, its doing some ignorant sh*t now.... Took it back out yesterday after fixing it to try it out and it done great for around 2 hours or so and then I thought it had done the same thing again inside the nosecone. It was stuck in 1st gear again and I limped it back to the truck. Took the nose cone cover off of it when I got to the garage expecting to see that the pin had somehow fallen out again but not that lucky. Instead intermediate shift lever somehow got in behind the 1st/2nd gear selector shaft, if that makes any sense to you. Once I had the nose cone cover off it took bout 2 seconds to pop the hockey stick out of the way and push the 1st/2nd shaft in. I put it back together and in no time it's done it again!!! What would cause this to happen? I'm thinking that the shifter/shifter rod is way out of adjustment and it's allowing some over-travel on the intermediate shift lever letting it get wedged behind the 1st/2nd shaft. Any help would be greatly greatly greatly appreciated!!!

You must have a lot of slop in the shift rods and they move apart far enought to move out of thier slot.

I still haven't figured it out but I've narrowed it down to either the shift rod itself or that it didn't have a reverse lockout plate and it was somehow allowing it to be going between gears.... But on a lighter note I ended up with a new buggy that I'll be posting pics of here shortly (if it ever quits raining here...) 102" wheelbase, spindle mount wheels, 15x12's on rear with V treads, 3 rib bus, 1641cc with DP heads, aftermarket cam, 2 barrel carb, electric pump, etc...
