Great! I'm ready to start putting some rubber seals on the bug, and start working on the interior. Tooooooo loud!

Well, time to switch gears on my build. My little 1385 works fine in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear but it has a hard time turning the 225/70r15 tires in 4th gear on the highway. Just not enough guts and causes the engine to ping after driving on hwy for a while. 4th gear is .82 and isn't cost effective for me to switch to .89 4th gear.

I pulled the roof rack off and have it for sale. Too much drag. I put the wheels and tires for sale and will pick up some 14" wheels and mount 27x8.50r14 tires. That will reduce my tire diameter by 1". I will put the header back on and look for a hideaway muffler.

The bug is heavier than a baja with fiberglass parts. The little engine probably has around 45 horse power (guess). I don't want to buy a new engine, as this one runs great and was rebuilt a year ago.

I've talked about it on here before, but my 58 Baja had a 1385 for about 300,000 miles.

I initially used H78-15 tires followed by 215-75s because the tire diameter was big enough to contact the body. NOT the torsion bar ends as so many worry about, but the inner fender wells. The tire size was the suspension travel limiter. That's why since the IRs conversion I use 30x 9.50s. The tires no longer tuck in so much in compression, but the still contact the inner fenders.

With 4.37 gears and the 1385, it worked fine. Many of those miles included commuting up and down the 14 freeway between the desert and LA. From 600' in the San Fernando Valley to nearly 4,000' at Acton, it was working. But it kept up with traffic. The worst climbs caused a downshift to 3rd, but that's why the trans HAS 3rd gear.

If you want offroadability or even the look of it, 14" wheels don't cut the mustard. The bedliner coating on the body doesn't fit with street cruiser style.

You might consider selling the 1385 to someone with an early 60s stock sedan and buying a 1600 and put on Kadron carbs. The reason my Baja did not get its 1385 rebuilt was because just the parts and machine work was nearly 2x the price of the same for a 1600. At the time the 1385 needed a rebuild, I bought a running 1600DP complete with shrouds, alternator, voltage regulator, clutch, carb, etc. for less than new pistons and cylinders the 1385 needed. Then the rebuild cost for the 1600 when needed was going to be far less than for the 40hp engine. I'm not saying the 40hp is a bad engine. But you can get more hp and torque and the same fuel economy for less cost and better parts availability with a 1600.

I took the rack off and can feel the difference on hwy. VWboat from the Samba was kind and loaned me his 27x8.50r14 rear tires to try out for now. They look smaller, possibly too small for my lift. BUT,I can feel and tell the difference in the gearing now- particularily 4 gear. I haven't changed the exhaust yet. The header should free up a little bit of HP.

If I went 205/75r15, I could keep my rims. They are only 1/4" shorter than my current tires, but narrower and lighter. If I went with 205/70r15, I'm an inch shorter and I'm more narrow. If I went 215/70r15, It's 1/2" shorter and slightly narrower. The engine option isn't one I'm exploring right now. I could shed some weight if I cut the body up and made it a baja, but that's not an option right now either.

With the rack removed and the 1" shorter 14" wheel/tires, I can feel the gearing difference. If I put the header back on, I may pick up another HP or two- I would think.

I have to replace my rear tires soon because of wear from my prior Toe issue. I just have to determine size based on my experiment. The rack may go back on, depending on the exhaust/tire experiment.

I document my journey to pick everyones mind, and to give a reference to future readers that contemplate a similar journey.

When you decide on a tire size let me know. I will check on prices.

I've decided to get General Grabber AT2 205/75r15. They are about .3" shorter, but .70 narrower and 7 lbs lighter.

I installed the header and quietpack. It hangs WAY TOO LOW. Thinking of having a wedge cut out if the top of the collector, then bending the collector to have an upward angle- reweld. I don't weld, so I don't know if that is feasible.

This little bugger climbs like a goat! Had fun today near Lake Pleasant. The exhaust drug once. Time to raise it up!

I took the bug to my friend at the fabrication shop. The header and muffler have holes rusted through. No use in patching it when the rest will rust through. I'll put the stock muffler back on for now.

New problem! I am leaking oil from the front of the case at the split. I tightened the bolts that hold the case halves together. The leak has increased. It isn't stripped. Now what?

This would be a good question for whomever did your rebuild. They should have a first hand knowledge of your case.

Just an FYI. Your new general grabber at2 tires are on the way. They are being shipped from ca. Should be here in a couple days. I think they will look great on your car.
