Hi all,

Finally got around to fufilling a boyhood dream and bought a baja Smile Loved these things as far back as I can rememeber and I cannot begin to tell you how frigen excited I am to finally have one.

So! The Baja is a 71 w/ 1600 and a host of problems. In random order:

Interior torn up(Seats are awesome though. Go figure)
Eletrical is a disaster(Not a big deal, I build robots.. this is cake)
Brakes pull to the left(Bleed/redo drums?)
Reverse doesn't work, just grinds and lurches back(clutch adjustment??)
Clutch needs adjusting, if I gun the engine when its the clutch is in and 1st is engaged it lurches forward some. Unless thats the normal behavior??
NO STEREO! (Oh good god!!)
Need a rack for it so my dogs can sleep in the back seat and I can put the backpacks up ontop for camping

Exterior is so so, but that is the very last thing I care about lol.

The good:

Engine runs well, but carb needs some tweaking.
Shifts well(Minus aforementioned clutch issues)
Windows work(cept for passenger lol)
Turns amazingly(These things handle like go carts. I LOVE IT)
No rust.(NO RUST)
Endless projects to amuse me.
Got it cheap.
Starts everytime, no big deal.
No backfiring/other random issues.

All around, I'm really excited I bought it. I'm gonna do what I can with it and then I know a guy who knows a good VW shop so I'm gonna take it there after I get paid next and let them finish tweaking it so I have a good platform to go from.

Thanks!

Thanks.. after having driven one for a more then 20 minutes I can really understand the issues in explaining why its so fun. Its such a fundamental experience.. nothing interrupts the concept that you are driving a motorized 4 wheeled platform lol. Just buzz, vroom, and the wind.

I am glad you bought it. I was looking hard at the craigslist ad on that one. I never went to see it, but was tempted.

Welcome to AzBaja.com and congrats on your "dream car".

Any plans for it?

Welcome to the site! Sounds like a typical 40 year-old car, lol.

Be careful where you take it (shop). Many assume that "it's such a simple car- ANY mechanic should be able to handle it," but I think that can be a misleading thought process.

Ditto Siacs and the "new member" advice. Take and post lots o' pics!

I have a ton of pics i'll upload later.. we spent most of the day working on it. Right now the goal is to get it ready for the road and to be plated. The brakes and rear gear are a mess. We adjusted the clutch(it was almost 2 inches before engaging instead of the 1/2 inch) and now the reverse works for a second before grinding and spitting it out of gear.

The brakes on the driver side are messed up as well. We were testing them when on jack stands and the passenger side acts close to how it should. Won't rotate under pressure when brake is only somewhat depressed. Passenger side requires us to push pretty hard to get it to resist turning under pressure.

Then we had an issue removing a bolt off the drum. lol good stuff. Its sitting under penetrating lube at the moment. I'll start a build thread in a few weeks when I get an order into Chirco.

Plans: Its mostly just for camping and getting around. So nothing too crazy.

Tip- if you buy a membership to this site (like $40/yr and includes sticker(s) and a t-shirt) you'll get 10% off ANYTHING you buy from Chirco. Can pay for itself real quick.

Second- are you sure the brakes are adjusted properly?

It would be recommended to pull all 4 drums for a cleaning, inspection and adjustment before proceeding with anything else. Probably just needs a little TLC to fix your brake woes.

Oh and BTW, welcome to the site!

Thanks for the info about the 10% off. Would pay for itself in under a month to be sure..

And I am pulling the drums apart tonight. Rounded off a few bolts so had to get some of those irwin extractor sockets. Was going to do it last night but fell asleep Razz
