Hello all, I just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Chris, I just moved to Phoenix, AZ and will be picking up new rail next month. It is an older chasis, not sure of the manufacturer, but looks impressive. It does of course need some work, but is complete. It has a 1776, swing arm rear (will be eventually changed) and link pin front end. I am waiting to pick it up as currently I have no place to store it while I get it back and running. I will be repainting the car as well as it has been sitting for a couple years. It will also be made road legal. I am looking for new friends to go driving and off roading with when I get it going. I am looking forward to having A LOT of fun!!!

no im not from NYC lol, I said UPSTATE NY.... I graduated with a class of 92 in 1999, my town has a population of 398, I lived on a dirt road OFF another dirt road... AKA the country!!! THERE is A LOT more to NY state then NYC my friend hahaha

hahaha I have to get my car together yet Smile Its a complete car, but has been sitting in a barn since like 1985.. The engine turns over and everything fine with great compression, im gonna tear it down and recondition everything, check the cylinders and make sure they are OK... The frame is gonna get a couple added bars for safety and a fresh powdercoat, and I have to replumb all the hydraulics... SOON, the rear gets an IRS and boxed trailing arms and the front gets new everything... Hoping for a mid travel by the end of the year. The car should be ready for trails by mid november... I cant waite to get out there with you guys!

OH WOW sounds great man! thanks!! Do you know anyone good with a welder for installing the rear end and support bars? I am thinking im just going to go with making my own rear torsion as it seems like it would be stronger, but I have to do some more research on that. Any help any of you local guys can give me on info or maybe even do the welding (would be glad to pay if needed for a good job). Eventually I am hoping to make some good friends for trail riding here Smile

I have welder and am OK at welding, I can do small stuff. If you need a great amount and a great job see Bugzyla and his crew.

I am actually looking at adding new front shock towers to the frame for 10" coilovers, and tearing out the swing arm rear to install a custom IRS (stock for now), but switch to 3x3 arms in the rear again with long coilovers. Im not changing the front end yet, so I am planning on using a stock IRS rear for now when I can find one. I am looking to get it powdercoated soon, so yeah, there would be a little bit of work that would need to be done hahaha. That being said, I have actually been looking at some of their parts so ill give them a call to see what they say Smile How are you at rebuilding the engines? I havent really had a chance to touch a VW engine yet (I have built others), this thing has been sitting in a barn since 1985. its a 1776 with a weber progressive carb. It does turn over very well by hand and seems to have great compression, but I would rather replace the bearings and check the cylinder walls before attempting to start it up, so I thought id just take a weekend and tear it down to see where I am at. Are you interested? Im more then willing to help you out in any way as well, but for the moment, I dont have a garage, so thats where my problem lies...

HEY THE PICS WORKED hahaha

So with the pics being posted, now you see what I have to work with. The frame and mesh flooring is perfect, the swing axle rear HAS GOTTA go, all the rims are rusted beyond use, the wiring harness will probably be getting changed out with a better self made one, and the frame will be getting powder coated after fabrication. A lot of the fun for me is just being able to restore an old buggy Very Happy That being said, does anyone know what kind of rail frame this is?? I know its from like 78 or 79...

WOW. Definetly needs a pressure wash and maybe a sand blast. Thats just alittle more work than I can take on right now. I have 3 cars to finish and 3 motors to build in the next month. Definetly check with Zyla he can take of all of that for you.

lol thats all good and as far as the sand blast goes, its getting powdert coated, the companies sandblast first anyway hahaha, but its all good, it needs work, but its gonna be a lot of fun Very Happy Thanks man

OK well, I havent updated this in forever it seems! Ive posted a couple areas but figured I would try to keep this up through my work in progress. The sand rail is no more! I stripped the chassis and did some bartering with Eric (dirtjunkie). I bought a 1966 beetle that was "converted" to a baja. The cutting was done and the baja kit was mocked up at best, it fits good and the body is in great shape as well as perfect fiberglass, but was missing a windshield that I have since bought. The car had no engine which I used from the rail. Eric and I spent a couple days working on the engine, but couldnt get the heads off the cylinders. We heated, beat, pryed to no avail. The good news was that everything inside the crank case and heads was beautifuly clean and the oil was like new (surprisingly). So with that being said, I bought all new tins, fuel pump, bolt on valve covers etc. to put the rest of the engine back together in hopes that it runs as great as it looks. We are pretty confident everything will be ok. The heads had solid Rocker Shafts and the valves moved freely. We completely assembled the engine and it is currently waiting to be installed. I also bought a single tube rear bumper that I have dropped off at Daryl's for some modifications and Ill have that back on Wed. I have cleaned up the jackman style rims and have a complete set of used tires that I will use for now untill all the kinks in the car are worked out. The goal was to have it up by this Thursday for the meet over here, but its looking really grim. Eric has been extremely busy (but helps whenever he can THANx ERIC), but my neighbors keep offering help and then bailing. I have to get the engine installed to make sure its good to drive. After that all I really have left to do is install the peddle assembly, bleed the brakes, install the windshield and weld in some seat brackets so I have a place to sit and take it for a test drive! Wish me luck and with any, Ill be on the road with it VERY VERY soon!

Looks good! Let's see the car!

TIP- carry a spare distributor cap EVERYwhere you go. Those see-through ones are notorious for cracking and leaving you stranded. That's what I've heard numerous times, anyhow.

OH OUCH!!!! I didnt think that it would make a difference! hahaha, plus it was $2 cheaper lol maybe thats why? Oh and here are some pics of the car I just took a few minutes ago... Its got the 7 piece kit including the rear valance, but i took it off today to try some things. I do plan on trimming the kit down some but have to figure out how small I want the fenders, right now they are just too low for my liking, it will be getting a light bar and a mentioned earlier, the rear bumper. Does anyone know where I can get some aluminum diamond plate for the firewall?? I would really like to get a piece in there, its proving to be a bit of a pain mounting things on the bumpy back end...

My first mod will be to swap to an IRS rear with 3x3 arms. After that eventually Ill move to the front at which point I am toying with the idea of changing to a 1 piece front end but I havent really decided. The front will get a +6 beam and link pin to get rid of that ball joint set up...

Helpful hints
REMOVE any non BOSCH ignition part and replace it with the correct BOSCH igntion part. Bosch platiniums are NEVER to be used in an air cooled engine. Sell the clear cap to the firt VW stoner you find as he will have hours of fun watching the spark. Got it.

HAHAHA well Ill just pick up an extra cap and use this one til it goes bad, no sense in wasting $$ As for the plugs, Ive used them in both my other VWs and they ran great.... And I will be getting a 1 piece for the front end, just not right away is all. Heres the pics of the engine in the car

Why should Bosch platinum plugs not be used in an air-cooled engine? What is the recommended plug? TY!
