what is the best way to hook up a set of offroad lights? through the fuse box? or a hot wire with fuse directly to lights and ground them?

I like to use a relay with a fuseable link feeding power to the relay and individual fuses for the lights.

I use a set of BOSCH/KC 40A Black relays with a blade fuse. I have a terminal strip next to the battery and run the relay off from that strip. I also run them via ground trigger from a switch in the dash.

Most people run things of of hot wires +12volts. I do it a little backwards and run thelong wire grnd/switch wire from the switch in the dash.

I try to avoid long runs of Hot +12volt wires in my race cars/baja. If you have a wire brake down and short you have meltdowns etc. and maybe fire if you run ground trigger wires so you +12volt wires a short you keep the power were it needs to be and not run back and forth in your car.

Only if you leave the lights on. I will crimp 2 or 3 fuse link wires at one end and only use one in case of a short I can repair the short and use a good link. Fuses perform the same function.

Relays keep the load off the switch.

A typical relay draws very little current and energizes an internal coil which can provide alot of output for things like lights, train horns, amp's etc. Use them so you don't overload wiring harnesses and fry em.

300w / 12 volts = at least 1- 25 Amp relay.
