Hi fellas, I'm Justin and apparently the newest of the new here.

I've been lurking on AzBaja for a while as I'm beginning a rail build. My build is a little less orthodox and seems to fit in here a *little* better than over on the samba or STF. Ya know, just a little.

Basically I need to clean out a garage bay and need to keep my self busy as I am currently an engineer by education but a bum by trade Sad

Seeing a '72 chassis and a 1600 got my mind rolling, so now I'm doing myself a "spare parts" build. It's not using junk, it's a finally realising I have enough good parts to build a whole car with most of it being, "Where the hell did I get that?"

So far I've put on a new beam, welded all the seams, installed hook and rod stops, rebushed the rear end, and put together a DP 1600 all for the grand total investment of $50. I just realised I actually have more beer money in the build than parts.

The pan is going to get all new brake hardware and once i have it running and stopping is when It's getting tubed out. Figure if I have a back bone to hold it together, might as well take advantage of it.

Intentions are a set of 31's out back and 235/75's out front or 235's out back and 7.00x15's in front all on stock wheels as i have a pair of each, stock wheelbase, DP 1600 with the possibility of an eaton M62 if i get ambitious (a 1:1.1 drive ratio should run 6 psi on a 1600). All work occurs in house, it's handy having a buddy with a bender Very Happy

I'm sure I'll be asking more, this is my first non-stock VW build. I currently also have a '54 Sedan, '57 Sedan, and a '74 Thing.

Justin

Ahh, just like any other not so well thought out plans, things never go as planned Rolling Eyes . Only this time things change for the better Laughing .

super short wheelbase, I'b be surprised if it's 90", shortback chassis, swing axle w/trans and solid mount, extended spring plates, balljoint beam, solid aluminum floor, steering wheel and column, 2 pairs of matching tires on matching wheels (31x10,50's and 195/75-15's), shifter mount, pedal mount, all cable tubes for a grand total of $200.

I pick it up tomorrow afternoon Very Happy

Torn as how to approach this. it's definitely getting my prepped beam, but whether to stay swingaxle and sell the IRS and spare parts or swap in the IRS and sell the swingaxle torsion housing.
