For the longest time i have wanted a baja bug for my first car, but i just found out theat they struggle at highways speeds, and i have to drive 10 miles on a highwa to school everyday. so i need an alternative to a bug that i cant take off road and on the interstate if i need to. I dont want a truck because they are for rednecks, and i dont really want a jeep because my friend has one, and i want something really unique. fuel economy is also kind of important. thanks!

You've been misinformed. Get a Baja and don't look back!

I'd guess it was out of tune or not a 1700. With the right carb and distributor my 1600 does great in the mountains. It's no V8, but it's not a 4500 lb. truck either.

You need a motor/trans combo that works for freeway speeds. My fasty baja has a 1915 motor and an 091 bus trans, it CRUISES at 75 mph and I have had it 90. Drove it round trip to tucson and back for its maiden voyage too.

Like Bugzilla stated there are junkyard combos and then there are real combos. My 1968 Baja with a stock 1600 that I rebuilt and 235 75 15 tires would go to Flagstaff with no more trouble than a stock Beetle and on the flat had no problem going 65 mph. I did spend the time to fine tune it. If it had built a basically stock but well thought out 1915 with a small W 100 cam it would of cruised at 65-90 mph up the hills. Most people selling a 1776, 1835, 1915 only have a 1600, most selling a stroker engine only have a 1776, 1835 or 1915. 95% of them were duped by the person who sold it to them who conveniently lost the invoice(s). If you do find one that actually is what they claim most of those have stock heads or stock heads with bigger valves and to much compression as they seem to gravitate to the $1400 stroker engines advertised in Hot VWs which need more than $2500 to make work. Once you test drive enough of them you can tell.

I never had a problem with any of mine even with aircooled motors. They all have water cooled ones now and could outrun most things but I also think you are misinformed.
