An executive rail. When you get done with those from tires put some 30" BFGs on it the off road ride will greatly improve.

I work for State Farm Insurance, so i get to wear a suit everyday. kinda funny to driving the dune buggy dressed up but at least its more fun then my ford.

I bought some 1300 Plus paddle tires and Douglas wheels for $300, Now i can really tear it up at the dunes!



So this prompted me to also want a faster motor so i am getting my motor from about 80hp to about 150hp, mostly by switching from the single port head to a port/polished dual port head among other goodies.



But now i have to get a Trans that can handle the power so i am switching from my built 4.37 to a built 4.12.



I am quite excited! Maybe this year i can actually beat those Diesel trucks that alway kicked my butt at the dunes sand drag.

One thing I noticed is your shoulder belt harness mounting if you are unfortuanate enough to get hit the shoulder belt will compress your spine.

any suggestions?

i was looking at some high back seats where the straps go through the seat. i have the MI buggy builders show/swap meet this weekend so maybe i can pick up some nice stuff.

You need to raise the bar up behind your seat so it is almost level with your shoulders, yes you would get a bit compacted as it is now.

You also need some bigger tires, Cool nice rail, good mods you have made to it. Love driving mine to work as well.

Baja, you don't need no stinking baja Laughing


And you can't let a little bad weather keep you from riding either.

Perrib and Leather have it right about the shoulder harness. And the seat won't have any say-so in the matter. Your shoulder harness should only hold you back into the seat, not down into it. The lap belt has the job of keeping your body down into the seat (or up when you're inverted). Using the shoulder harness to hold you down into the seat causes compressive fracture of the spine So the angle from the top of your shoulder to the mounting bar needs to be within about 10 degrees of horizontal. Typically the bar should be about 4 inches below the top of you shoulders as you sit in the car. Having the shoulder belts mounted low also allows your upper torso and head to slide forward under the belt in a frontal impact (running into something). Steering wheel rims don't taste all that good! They also don't feel so great on the chest. The way to fix this is to add a 1-1/2" x .095 tube across the cage at the correct height. The faster your engine, the more you need this!

I was able to get 4x new wheels real cheap and took my extra set tires and slapped them on. So now i am running 31x10.5.r15 on all four corners. I will try them out for the first time this weekend, i figure if i air them down to 20-25psi it should make the ride even smoother!



Also, that new turbo muffler that is in the picture is WAY better than the super trapp that i was running before. The buggy is so much more enjoyable to drive around town with the muffler it is much quieter and has a deeper tone, i can listen to my music and not have to worry about pissing off some cop. plus i get a little more torque back in the low end, the down side is that it cuts out around 6K. So if i am at the dunes or the sand drags, i will run my super trapp so i can reach 7-8K. Although i was thinking of switching over to a series 40 welded flowmaster muffler, thinking it should get my high rpm's back, thoughts?

I think 7-8K is stretching your luck beyond reason in a VW motor. Especially if you plan to drive it to work on Monday morning. Valvetrain, case, rods, crank, flywheel, clutch and gearbox all object to that sort of RPM. Do you have a scattershield? Sure your legs aren't right next to the bellhousing, but the GAS TANK is! And swingaxle gearboxes were designed for 40hp in mild use on the street with 5.20-15 tires. You can spend 10s of thousands on them and still not deal with 7-8K rpm.

OTOH, I agree entirely with the Turbo Muff. It was invented for use on a 3 liter 6 cyl turbo engine with all exhaust through one 2" size muffler. It should handle all the output of your normally aspirated VW.

I was doing 6k drops at the sand drags, maybe i should ease up on it. I work a normal job and cant afford to rebuild my motor every year.

If you think the turbo is better than the Welded muffler i will leave it alone. Like i said i love the sound. Also, I think the turbo is forest legal so i dont need to run a super trapp in the woods, but i could be wrong.
