Fella's being a nube in the baja group has me a little stumped? I am wondering what sort of carb and intake setup I should go with? I have a basically stock motor but want a little more ump!! I currently have the single barrel on the motor but want a little more. I dont want dual carbs because this is going to be used for sand dunes, fire trails and street driving here in the michigan area. I think I have narrowed my choices down to either a HPMX style or a progressive style 2 barrel. But I need to be enlightened here. So let me know what your thoughts are on this.

Also what do you all recommend for piston and cylinders seeing how I am replacing these. I dont want to do any machining. Just a install and be done.

For a stock motor, nothing beats dual Kadrons in my opinion. They're super easy to tune and maintain, and they'll give you plenty of poop. For the money, they're fantastic. I don't know why so people seem to shy away from dual carbs, other than the fact that somebody who didn't know any better might have told them they would have tuning problems. My second choice would be a single Zenith set-up. That's a great carb and will run practically upside-down under water. Single 40 Weber IDF (NOT HPMX), would be #3, but if you're not a maintenance guy, you'll be bummed as the idle jets will constantly need cleaning attention or it will run like it's choking on a moose turd. Weber Progressives are a good carb, but you have to be really good with them (or really lucky) to tune them correctly. Lots of people swear by them. More people swear AT them. Old school set ups like the Holley Bugspray are super reliable and simple, too. Although not a perfect carb, they make up for a lot with their simplicity and reliability.

I've had good luck with slip-in 87mm's over the years for a slip-in upgrade, although you won't notice a whole lot of difference in power.

i really know almost nothing about carbs so sorry if thats a dumb question..

I can set you up with a set of Kad's for a reasonable price. They will be rebuilt and re-bushed, with new Scat linkage, and new air cleaners. My kits come with everything you need, including fuel lines, gaskets, balance tubes, clamps... everything. I even include tuning instructions and a warranty.

As far as the Zenith goes, the 32NDIX is the one. Make sure that you completely rebuild any carb that you buy, particularly from an unknown source. I (stupidly) toasted a brand new engine recently (I suspect) due to a set of carbs that I bolted on that the guy said were good to go. One of the carbs didn't even have a float installed in it. When I started the car and tried to run it there was a stream of gasoline coming out the tailpipe like a water hose, and I suspect that it washed my bearings out.

Here's a photo of the rod sticking out of my block just to prove my point:



No question is a dumb question, bro. That's why we have forums like this.

1.4:1 rockers would not be a wise choice for a stock 1600 engine in a baja or off-road vehicle, in my opinion. This will increase your high RPM performance at the expense of your low RPM range. With a stock engine, you don't want to run it at high RPM's anyway, so you really haven't gained anything. You've lost performance for the expense of about a $200.00 set of rocker arms. If you want to throw away money, I'll send you my address, and I'd be happy with only $100.00! That way we both win! You save $100 and I gain $100!

Good stuff. Lots of people benefit from discussions like this. I'm sure perrib will chime in any minute, too. He's pretty good with engine/performance questions, too. I'm sure he'll offer some good advice. Although he and I don't always see things exactly the same, I deeply respect his opinions and would recommend considering any words of wisdom that he has to offer, as well.

For the dunes, street and fire roads the dual kads would be the way to go.
splitting the case and installing an Engle W100, Gene Berg 307 or Engle VZ 14 cam would really help get it motivated.

thanks alot for the info.

on the rockers, my baja is mostly a road car Sad i really am not sure how much i will be able to offroad it cuz there isnt a whole lot of places in ohio to go.

but i REALLY need more top speed i drive on the highway alot every day and having to go 65 and still be almost red lining it will be very bad.
so the top end power would be great. but if i have to over rev it to get any benefit then its a waste i guess.....
jw what are you calling "high rpms" ?? 4,500 or like 5,500

if i had 1.4 rockers could i just take them off and switch out for the stock ones on the rare fortunate opportunity that i could get out in the mud??

A Kadron kit is available for the single port engine. At one time there were plently of single port intakes for Zeniths now it is obsolete.

When I speak of high RPM's, I'm referring to 3500+. I wouldn't recommend driving a stock-engined VW at 5500 RPM's. Heck, for me I'd say you're pushing it pretty hard at 4500 and definitely wouldn't drive for sustained periods at 4500. It's fine for passing another car, or to race your buddy at the track, but you're asking for trouble taking a road trip from Phoenix to Tucson at that RPM. You better have a towing policy on your insurance.

You'll really notice a bigger improvement with:

- Modified heads with porting that can take advantage of the increased lift.

- A cam that is designed for ratio rockers (like the FK series).

- Larger displacement than 1600.

- Carburetion that matches the intake and cam design.

The improvement you'll notice is in the higher power band, say 3000 -3500 RPM's and up.

Another thing you absolutely have to consider when you're going to set up 1.4:1 rockers is rocker arm geometry. You're almost certainly going to need to do two things: Shorten your pushrods and shim your rocker stands to achieve perpendicular rocker arms at 50% of valve lift.
