Well, time for a new car and I went to pick up a 1968 Baja Bug. Car looked great, ran so-so (due to old gas and a need of an oil change). Interior is nice.

Here are some pictures from when I bought it...

Since these pictures I have a rear engine cage, got a rear view mirror in there, replaced a few loose bolts, etc...

Getting new racing seats and 3 point seat-belts in on Friday... Wink

What's you guys' opinion on VW Paradise in San Marcos? That's who I'm having my seats installed by...

How hard is it to remove the stock seat rails from the pan?

My fingers get tired clicking on photo links. Next time try to copy and paste the img coding. Smile

Since VW Paradise has the fasted VW powered dragster they should be able to get your seats securely installed.

You can just leave the seat tracks in. There are a lot of spot welds to drill out.

Fixed it Smile

Okay, because they told me they would most likely need to remove the old seat rails to install my brackets...and it will be another 1-2 hours of $80/hr to do it!! Is that a bunch of crap?

Here are the mounts I have...

Good looking car!

Seat rails...just cut 'em out and grind 'em down with a 4 1/2" grinder. That's what I did, took me about half an hour. In fact, installing your own seats is pretty easy, especially since you have pre-made brackets.

Kyle

The floor should be reinforced if the seats are getting bolted to the floor. I was thinking they were welding in tubing to the tunnel and heater channels to attach the seats. Two hours to cut them out with a cut off wheel or torch is a little much. If you drill them out and weld up the holes two hours is about right. If your just going to have them bolted in you can do that yourself.

Thanks!

I would grind them out. but I don't want to burn up all the new carpet Sad

Yeah...How do I drill holes and mount the seats?

Either way I'm going down there, I need seatbelts installed, and you have to take the rear quarter window out and remove part of the pillar to do that...

Okay so here is my idea...

I just cut the sections out of the old rails that the seat mounts need to fit in...

Then drill through to the other side and put big pieces of aluminum or some type of metal to keep the bolt from coming through....?

Here is a little picture I drew to show what I'm thinking of doing...

What do you guys think?

Okay great. I got the seat-belts in today. Only hard part was cutting a hole in the carpet box that the previous owner installed so that the retractors would fit...

I may have a problem though...The car lets out smoke puffs when I let off the gas and shift. Seems to be all white smoke, which means its running rich right?

I know if it is blue then it's burning oil...

and I checked the oil after driving it today, it was lower than a couple days ago when I checked it. It may be the leak in the dipstick piece. It leaves a few drops wherever I park. but not enough to move it a half an inch on the dipstick...

So am I burning oil? if so, what do I need to do to fix that?(I'm kinda dreading the answer to that question lol)

More Updates!..........................

-Installing an electronic ignition
-Rebuilding the carb
-Adjusting the valves
-Adjusting the timing
-Replacing spark plugs

Well, I was a bit anal about not burning anything in the interior...

lol those are towels covering just about everything.

but here is the end result after cutting and grinding and many @!%#&! 's lol

Hella comfortable. Also got the valves and timing done today. carb getting rebuilt tomorrow. found out the guy before me relocated the fuel filter right next to the exhaust, so a plastic filter is not going to cut it...getting a metal one tomorrow as well.

I assume this will work?

That's the one the previous owner put on there...

installed the electronic ignition, replaced plug wires and plugs, now have a Weber progressive tuned to perfection. car is hella fast!

You guy's would not believe the condition of the previous spark plugs...

All of the plugs were dark black for one. meaning way too rich.

Also, can you guess what the gap was for all of them?.... 0.060!!!!! holy macaroni!

Oh yeah, on top of that...the front two plugs I got out by hand. I gotta keep an eye on this car. I can't believe it was even running.

just ended up going with a dual port 1600. once it needs a rebuild I'll make it bigger but for now I'm working on suspension...even a small motor with great suspension can beat a big motor with little suspension
