I'm looking to get a couple distributor for my projects I have going, and I would like to know what distributors people are running. Everything I have ever purchased VW has always had 009's on them. The last 3 have a mechanical advance. A lot of threads I've found have basically just talked trash about other dizzy's but not explained why? So, my question is what are you using? Why go vacuum, instead of mechanical? I'm running a 1641, and soon to be a 1600 on the T bucket. I usually put in ignitors, to get rid of the points.

Here is the scoop, the original german 009 dizzys were capable of more advance than the current new 009s being sold by empi and others. The problem with the newer ones is without sufficient advance it creates an off idle stumble that is very noticable in most cases. The stock vacuum advance dizzys have the centrifugal advance as well as the vacuum advance, the vacuum advance is what helps with the off idle stumble and the centrifugal advance creates more advance at higher RPMs.

Its is possible to take the later 009s apart and modify them for a wider curve, but its a lot of work and if you have never had one apart before it may be a little intimidating. You can also change the weights and springs inside to allow the advance to come in faster or slower.

So, is it best to just stick with a 009 and go with the vac advance, or are the other distributors available better? There's so many to choose from when looking, I'm not sure what good and what's junk. Obviously, the remade 009's are one to stay away from. On samba, there's 010's, 019's 022's. Pertronix, and MSD's. The one thing about the MSD's though, I've noticed a lot of the boxes for sale, What's up with that?

If you want to spend some $$$$ you can get an 010 which has the best advance curve of any stock vw dizzy. Its just hard to find one and it will cost you about $70 for parts (cap rotor, points, condenser, etc). If you have a ported vacuum connection on your carb just run a vacuum advance dizzy (a ported vacuum port on a carb will only have vacuum when the throttle is open, manifold vacuum is full time vacuum and you dont want the advance hooked there).

If you want to step up and spend a few more $$ go with a pro comp or an msd dizzy and ignition system. I can get you a complete pro comp system for $295 shipped to your door, its basicly the same thing as an MSD onl;y half the price.

If you are talking about the pro comp set up, its $295 for the dizzy, coil, and cdi box. The wires are another $35, they are MSD.
