last night and this morning i took the fenders off, took out the back seat, all the rest of the vinyl panels, removed the seat belts, pulled the gas tank....the tank is filled with rust and when you shake it around you can hear all the dust, rust and dirt moving around inside it.

another problem with the steering, it slips sometimes, mostly it slips when you crank the wheel all the way to either direction, like right before it stops turning it will slip, but when the steering gets really hard it slips too.
is my steering gear box bad?

Congrats. Finding decent bugs is tough around here, too. Looks like a good project. If I were you, I'd completely strip it down and take care of all the rust first. That'll take a while and you can sell the stock parts you won't be using and save up your money for all the other parts you'll need!

The rims are EMPI 8's ( if you were closer I'd take them off your hands.)
The computer was for fuel injection.
I don't know about the quality of the pans.
The steering shaft is normal. It's designed to colapse in case of a head on.
In most cases you can clean up a tank, but it's not always worth it.

Is that a custom convertable top in the picture?

the umbrella??

pity i dont have the engine to go along with that computer.

i was hoping to sell the running boards and all the rest of the stuff i dont need, exept the rims i like them to much Smile , but my dad wants me to restore it to stock form and not baja it so he said to hang on to the parts for now, i really dont want to do that because i will have to do SO much more work because the stock fenders are rusted around the bolt holes and two of the bad rust spots are in an area that i would cut of if i baja'ed it.
im still planning to baja it but i just have to convince my dad that it doesn't ruin the car first.

i just spent two hours with as air compressor, vacume, and hammer, cleaning out the whole car.
theres 3-4 spots that are pretty much gone because of rust but other that that its in good shape.

im planning to go out and take the body off and start my long vigil against rust.

one piece of advice that i can give you is if your building a baja do it right the first time so you dont have to do it again and spend more money than you would have if you would of just spent the extra cash and did it right the first time
just my .02
good luck !!!

i took the body off and now im working on the chassis.

[img][/img]
on this side of the back i just need to reweld all the seams on the "arm" and it should be good.

the other side is a little rougher.
i had to cut the smaller piece out so im going to replace it with another L shaped piece just like it.
[img][/img]

im not sure what the guy before me was thinking but he cut out almost the whole weld joint between the "arm" piece and the main beam.

[img][/img]
i think i should be able to weld it shut or use a patch/brace and weld it back together.

the front is another thing though its pretty rusted out.

left side is the worst
[img][/img]
[img][/img]
[img][/img]

im hoping to use patches and weld it all back together.
i might have to cut a little more of the metal out.
do yall think that will work? like will it be structurally sound?

bottom of the whole frame head.

[img][/img]

other side isnt atall as bad

[img][/img]
[img][/img]
ill just patch the holes and weld a plate on the bottom.

im going to coat the whole chassis with some kind of bed liner.
the kind that treats and prevents rust would be awsome but i already hav a couple cans of rhino liner so ill have to check into the prices.

will all my ideas will work? and will everything be solid?

these pieces came with the car too....what are they exactly?

#1[img][/img]

#2[img][/img]

this one is really weird.
made out of rubber and its shaped like a big funnel/cone.

#3
[img][/img]

#4[img][/img]

#5[img][/img]

#6[img][/img]

this is all the heater parts right?
#7[img][/img]
is this everything for the heater? or am i missing parts for it??

the body its rusted out pretty bad around the edges of the whole bottom of the car.

front left
[img][/img]

and along the bottom of the left side
[img][/img]

the right side is alot worse than the left. i dunno why but it is

front
[img][/img]

side
[img][/img]

the inside is pretty rough in the back but thankfully the worst spot is covered by the rear seat so it doesnt have to look pretty.

[img][/img]
[img][/img][img][/img]
[img][/img]
[img][/img]

the front left side is pretty good but the right side is a little rough

[img][/img]

do you guys think all the holes are patchable??
i have to cut a fair amount of metal out of the really bad spot in the back and then put in a massive patch.

opinions, thoughts, advice ??

well as if i didnt get a sweet enough deal on the bug i bought, a guy gave my grandpa this baja for parts

[img][/img]
[img][/img]
[img][/img]

its pretty rusted out but alot of the parts are still good.

so for free i got

a good set of rims and good back tires
[img][/img]

a baja kit off the car

[img][/img]
[img][/img]
the only problem is its a bug eye kit and the more i look at them the less i like the "bug eye" look, but for free you cant beat it....and maybe it will grow on me.

4 fairly new KYB gas shocks

[img][/img]

a good gas tank, swing axle tranny, aftermarket thumb style shifter, pedal asembly, and lots of random cables and other parts that i am missing on my bug.

I hate to break it to you, but that car is pretty rough. It's worse than my DD, which I've decided to just drive and enjoy because I didn't want to go through the trouble of repairing all the rust. You'll have to grind/cut everything away, see what's left and decide if you want to pursue the project then.

Having said that, pretty much anything is repairable. It's a matter of patience, skill, time, etc. Look through the paint/bodywork forum over at the Samba. Lots of good info over there. I've also heard the BugMe videos are good for learning about repairing this sort of damage.

For some good news: Lots of those odd/weird parts you were asking about are fuel injection/emissions pieces and will fetch a good price to an enthusiast looking to restore his car. It looks like you got a good haul in parts, so you can at least sell that and have some money to put towards what you want.

Good luck!

Kyle

your right it is pretty rough, but compared to most other bugs around here (ohio) its in really good condition, and for the price i paid it was a pretty good deal.

thanks alot for the suggestion ill go check it out.
