About a year and a half ago I had a dirtbike accident in my local dunes in North Bend, Oregon. I haven't been on this forum for a long time. Not since I was rebuilding a baja I had a few years ago. And Everyone on here was so helpful :). Now I'm 19 years old and have sustained an injury to my spine at the T-7 level of my spine. I am paralyzed and a paraplegic. My reason for posting on here again is that lately I have been thinking of a way to have a Baja again. I know theres the Autostick tranny. I would have to have an automatic and I absolutely love the VW Type 1 1600. I am just wondering How the automatic transmissions work and if they can be beefed up to handle more power than stock? Because I would like someday to buy and put in an auto tranny so that I could drive a baja again. Hand controls aren't an issue, I would have those covered. I just wanna know if theres some way I dont have to have a manual transmission. Since I cant use the clutch.
Thanks,
Jordynarz

Man, I have had numerous air flight accidents racing motocross that's why I got into baja's. It's motocross with a cage:) I'm sure we can all figure something out, somebody will know someone who can do it.. I would try calling a VW transaxle repair or aftermarket manufacturer and see what they can do. Hope all goes well! I'm glad to see your still doing what you love Smile Excited to see this project as well!

Type 3's and 4's came with automatic transmissions. They were 3 speeds, so you won't win any races with them, and you won't have great gearing to speak of, but you could certainly have some fun in a play baja! I'd be interested in seeing how this turned out.

I agree with 57, the type 3 full automatic would be the ticket. Contact don at www.donsbusbox.com he doas manual trannys but can probably direct you to someone that can do autos. I head of somewhere in cali that does performance autos but I can remember where it was. Put together a 1915 for hp and you should have a great combo.

This might be a little out there, but I think you could setup a hydrolic hand clutch on the sifter like a motor cycle. The hard part is were to place the gas and brake handels. Maybe a motor cycle twsit throtal on the shifter?????

My budys Suburbon had the hand thing, down for gas forward for brake. He broke is back ridig ATVs.

Thanks! I have the Down for Gas and Push for brake in my 1995 Buick Riviera! Those work great!. But I'm still wondering what are the beetle auto trannys like?

The limit to a VW T-1 autostick is the 160mm clutch disc. It should work for a light sandrail and 1915 engine with a stock cam. They need vaccum to shift. The best transaxle to use would be a T-2 automatic or Vanogon automatic transaxle.

Alright thank you! So. Does the type 1 autostick have like a shifter and you just shift it like without a clutch?

When you move the shift lever the clutch is release via a larg electrically operated vaccum motor It might be possible to adapt the vac motor to a 4 speed.

That would be a pretty cool modification if it would work!

I think it would, The arm on the transaxle would need to lbe lengthened. The only draw back is you would not be able to finesse the clutch if needed.

I think you could also do the same with off the shelf parts. At this time could buy a

12 VOLT HYDRAULIC POWER UNITS

this will avoid the Vacuum stuff and use modern of the shelf stuff.

You will need to put some sort of presure valve to limit the pressure to the slave cylender. You want max flow so it activates fast but do not want to over presurize the sytem and blow the cylinder out. Next you needs some sort of way to bleed the cylinder back with a check valve and and adjustable bleed.

Now you have the option for the botton on top or on the side of the shift knob, if it's on top, it ill activate the pump when you palm the ball, if it's on the side you will use your thumb to hit the button.

The big knob presure valve I think would work best you can mount them in a easy spot to adjust them, but once you get them set it should not need to chnge them much... This will take a little enginering on your par and some skill with hydrolics and and electics like relays, fabracation etc. but can be done.

Cost is the tuff one the parts will run a few hundred, not sure about the cost of the pump.

I also think with all the new air bag stuff you you can come up with somthing too. just do not know about a slave cylender that will work on the trans axle.

Dang! Thanks a lot That would be a lot cheaper and better performance than an automatic transmission :). Someday When I buy another baja I'm definitely going to do this! Thanks

Man, thats my worse nightmare.

Stay strong man.

Hey, if Evan Evans can race(and win) in offroad racing, you could kick some ass in a baja witth the same setup!
