Finally, I had some time to mount them (Thanks for the help Joey). I noticed the body is a little tweaked, so it's not a perfect fit.


I'll make a couple more adjustments to the fenders to even them out more. Plus, I'm fabricating special washers that will hold the fender more securely to the body.


Here's a good angle of how uneven the nose is in relation to the rest of the body. The drivers side fender looks like it's mounted too far forward, even though they are even from behind. I'll have to play around with some more.


The side view looks good to me. I'll keep the rear fenders for now, and the gap will be filled when I mount the brush guards.


Here's a better view of the uneveness. The guy butchered the front end when he mounted the nose. I'm not too concerned.

Took her to the paint shop today. Nervous as hell as to how it'll turn out. I think it will be fine because it doesn't need to be showroom quality. Plus, if there are any imperfections I'll just cover it with a decal or dirt. heh. heh.
After the paint is done, I'll wait a month or so before applying the decals. It will give me time to do other stuff, like interior work.

Can't wait to see the results!!!

White and Blue! The only way to do it. The colors I chose were Chevy White & Global Blue. I wanted a slightly darker blue. I'm going in the shop tomorrow to check on the progress.

Picked up the bug today and wow! Looks awesome. Exactly what I wanted. Gonna start on the interior this weekend while the paint fully cures. I think they said 30 days before applying the decals and pinstripes, ect.

My only (serious) problem with the shop was the fact that somebody didn't lift up on the reverse lockout trigger when putting it in reverse and broke the shifter. Didn't know this until after we left and was trying to shift into second, it kept wanting to go into reverse. Eventually had to have a buddy bring me an old shifter to get her home when I gave up and pulled over. When I took the Empi shifter off, a piece of metal from what I guess was part of the reverse lockout feature, fell out of the housing.

Tested all the gears with the stock shifter and the tranny seems okay now.

I'm going to call them up tomorrow to see how they handle it. Other than that, I'm really pleased with the paint. There's a couple spots that need attention, but I was expecting that from a Maaco job. Nothing I can't fix/hide/rub out.

I'll let you guys know (whoever is watching this topic anyways) what happens. Whatever the outcome, at least it wasn't a Gene Berg Shifter they destroyed, just a $58.00 Empi! Smile

WOW WOW WOW! This is such a cool project man. I love it. I think I need to scrounge up some old RC stuff and see if I can piece a good old Scorcher back together. Looks just super! Can't wait to see it with the decals!

Yeah, that replica was commissioned by Tamiya corp. I'm sure they had an unlimited budget for that one. Beautiful work done by BUG BOX.

Found some cool used Jackman style wheels today for a good price, with good driveable (near new 31"BFG bajas in rear) tires as well. 15x8 rears, 15x5 fronts. The wheels look a little beefier than the run of the mill ones you see at bug shops. Also came with custom shaved down front drums if I ever want to run without front brakes.

Bought some other stuff to keep the project alive as well, like more interior & engine stuff. Couple more weeks and the body will be ready for the custom decals & pinstriping.

Here's a pic of the tires mounted. The 31" tires fit nicely, just the old school look i was looking for. A few more tweaks to the rear suspension is needed.

I think so too! Turns out the free tires that came with the front rims are not worth keeping, so I'm looking at new tires for the fronts. Probably stick with BFG's. I was looking for a slightly taller tire, maybe 215 75 15 ? Any thoughts on that? It would still have a good stagger, even when I go down to 30" tires in the rear when those used tires crap out on me.
