It's always a good day when you can spend it in the garage working on the baja. I finally got a free weekend. Seems like for the last couple months I've either been at the dunes, or working on the rail so I could go to the dunes. Developed a trans problem last weekend, so decided to park the rail and work on the Ghia for a while. I fabbed up some supports for the front shocks to prevent the towers from bending in. I had to hold off on this until I got the Fuel Cell. Now the front framework is almost ready to send to the powder coater.

Also added some more to the cage. Bars next to the doors, and bars under the dash to tie the interior cage to the front framework. I had to rework the vertical bars that are next to the back of the seats since the seat was rubbing on it.

I think I'm getting pretty close to done adding bars to the cage. Since this will be far from a race car, the cage is more for additional support more than anything. I will probably add a few 1" bars for bracing, but pretty much all of the 1-1/2" bars are in.

Thanks for the compliments. First time anyone has refered to it as "delicious", but I'll take that as a good thing. LOL Hope to spend more time this weekend on it so should have more pics soon.

Do you have a 6rib gearbox? I noticed the tubing on top of the tunnel.
How does that drive compared to a normal box (practical, I'm no good at ratio numbers). What kind of top speed can I expact with a normal 1600 engine?

Thanks in advance.

Its actually a 3 rib bus trans, but I may end up going to the 6 rib 091, will depend on $ later this year. I expect it to drive pretty much the same, although the Subaru engine will make a big difference. As far as the top speed goes, With the 1600 I would think you could pull low highway speeds fairly easily, 65 or so, all depends though on the tires you have. Somewhere on the site here there is a chart that gives you a good idea, don't remember where it is.

I have a 'normal' 1600 engine. I have 235/75R15 tires, which are about 29". I can easily cruise around 70 on the freeway. topped out at 80(well, didn't really 'top out'. I just didn't want to go any faster haha) after all, a bug is an oversized whiffle ball Shocked

Got the rear seat mounted in the car last night. Spent quite a bit of time over the weekend trying to get the welding finished up on the cage, got pretty close, just a couple joints left. Need to remove the rear shocks to get to them. Next will do the front seat mounts, some straps for the fuel cell, and then on to the rear wing and radiator mounts. Then only about three years worth of bodywork. I saw a really cool paint idea at Barrett Jackson. This guy had painted some stripes that looked like carbon fiber. He told us how he did it, so thought I would experiment a little, and maybe do some of the same on the car. I was planning on using the Cherry Red for the main color, and then two wide stripes from front to back in the carbon fiber, and have them carry through the dash as well. Then set them off with some pin stripes. Any thoughts? I'm no good at photoshop or I would try to sketch something up.

Definitely dig the Subaru power, thats on my wish list for my baja. As for the EJ22 thats definitely a good choice. My friend has a Subaru that came stock with an EJ22T, and the 2.2 is supposedly the only closed deck block that Subaru has made, and definitely one of the strongest. Sweet.

Seems like it's been a while since I was able spend some quality "Garage Time", but finally got out there some this weekend. Fabbed up some hold down straps for the fuel cell. Used a set of small bump stops to help keep the back of the cell off the steel, then plan to line the contact areas with some rubber gasket material of some type before it is permanantly installed.

Also got the lower front bumper mounts welded in place. This will allow me to remove the bumper and still keep the strength. Eight small bolts and it comes off.

Next up is getting the steering system all put together. This is proving to be a little frustrating as well as expensive. Them u-joints are pricey!
