hey guys
very new to vw (except the 58 bus in jr collage that was to be for my 'band' long story) so any info will be taken as gospel Laughing
any who my buggie is currently on a 67 chassis. well it was, now its in several piles around my 67 chassis. if i want front disk and IRS rear is there a preferred year to get? is a bus chassis doable and or preferable? smog is not an issue since it will still be registered as a 67 (no smog here 75 and older) it will mostly be trail and street, maybe some sand, ok mostly to starbucks and back but it would be nice to be capable of offroad when time permits. any help in this would be great

thanks

My memory is a little shakey here but I believe the 67 was the balljoint front end and the swing axle rear end. Not exactly a favorable year. If you could get ahold of a 69+ (non-super) chassis it will come with an IRS rear end which is considerably more stable and easier to get around with. Depending on how much you want to offroad this, you can either take it easy and keep the balljoint front end, or I believe somebody here makes conversion beams that will mount directly up so you can use a kingpin front (it was the front end they used on the 1966 bugs and prior).

Personally, I say if you're not going to be extremely rough with it offroad, the balljoint front end would be great and I'd stick with it. I ran a balljoint for the longest time and I had no problems. As far as the rear end goes, if you're handy with a welder, you could always convert your current chassis to an IRS which will save you the headache of trying to find a good chassis with a title.

Anybody else want to correct me on anything or pick up on where I left off?

Looks like right on info to me. If you do with a 69 IRS pan you can hunt down a Ghia balljoint front end, they had disc brakes and will bolt right in a T-1 framehead.

thanks a lot for the info.

since my 67 pan is in poor condition it might be a good idea for me to get a whole new set up. and swap out the front b/j beam for an aftermarket l/p beam.

but since it will be on the road a lot and disc are important to me. are the disc conversion kits easyer and or cheaper for b/j or l/p?

does any one know if bugs eventually came with stock front disk? maybe mid 70's?

thanks again
