I hate getting stuck, especially since I usually go out in the desert alone.
I'm old and fat and I won't last long out there.

I'd like to at least get traction to both rear wheels. After extensive research I've learned locking/limited slip differentials would cost me more than I paid for my entire car.

I drive a lot on the street, so a spool is out.

Could I use a turning/cutting brake to slow down a spinning wheel and direct power to the opposing wheel? Is this a practical way to get traction?

Any other ideas?

Sounds good, but Im guessing that would rip your bug transaxle gears a new one!

yup !!! thats how i have done it for years,but it is hard on the tranny so far i have been lucky and not lost a tranzaxle to it yet........knock on wood

Make it do more work. If you high centered and lock up the tire in the air, that means half the cars balance is on that tire, and that would put alot more pressure on the gears.

Just guessin.

I use the turning brake for that purpose often. I can drive up a tall rock as the first wheel get off the ground I lock that one and push the rail over with the one still geting traction. I have also used it to run sideways on a steep incline. I never broke a transaxle doing this. I do use a super diff and torsional axles.

Truning brakes are hard on the spider gears. forcing most your load over them. but if you have a super diff or somthing like that you would be just fine. I have turning brakes in my car and can fast handle them like a fake posi.

Posi are not a good choice in a VW with most of the lbs out back your car all ready does not like to turn in the loose stuff no with the posi in place it will realy not like to turn and just push.
