I'm getting closer and closer with the car. Everyday I get one step closer to being able to move it under its own power. I'm gonna try and have it done for the night at sonic in October. Smile For now here's some pictures:

I'm just running the stock one for now. Eventually I'm going to IRS so I'm not spending money on this one unless it breaks. I've just got to learn to be easy on it. But it should be okay.

Update:

i started working on my rear fenders yesterday. I have the first one done:

I have the passenger side made, just need to make mounts and bolt it on. Then they will both get swirls like my firewall.

eventually i'm going to make some nerf bars out of 1 inch tubing that will go up near where the fender leaves off.

I figured there was a reason. Iim making "sliders" not nerf bars! so ill run longer rear fenders when i end up going metal ones.

I never really liked the look of the longer fiberglass fenders. that's why I went shorter on mine. Plus its less stuff down at the bottom to get ripped off by a tree or something.

yeah, its getting there. i have more sanding to do on the front end then i'll prime and paint it. the roof is just gonna go primered for a while cause it has a lot of body work to be done to it.
its really just piddly stuff that needs to be done to get it driving. hopefully i can get it done in time to take it to the Foddrill show.

its really not too hard. you just need a big enough sheet of aluminum to make both sides. some fenders you'll see will make the mounts all in one piece with the aluminum but some of those line up poorly. i made separate pieces of aluminum and bent them so they would be flat to the fender and flat to the original fender mounts.
i cut mine with a band-saw. so in some way or another you need to be able to cut the aluminum.
if you mount them the way i did, make your mounts and drill the holes then bolt them on. then lay your fender piece on top, mark the holes on the fender, drill them and bolt it on. you should have a pretty decent looking fender.

if you look my driver fender doesn't line up perfectly near the back. my passenger one is much better since i did that one after some experience.

if you'd like more pictures let me know.

UPDATE:

so the other day I purchased about 5 yards worth of fabric (4 grey, 1 blue) so that I could reapholster my stock rear seat and redo my door and quarter panels. The fabric I got actually exactly matches the fabric in my PRP suspension seats that are going in the front.

this is how the seat turned out:

I will take pictures once its in the car.

I also started on my rear bumper/engine cage. I will take pictures of it tomorrow after its finished.

here's my engine cage. this is just the basic concept is done. now I just have to make tabs for certain things (oil cooler, oil filter, lights, license plate, etc.)

its all .090 wall 1 1/2" tubing except for two pieces and the hoop I'm building which will hold the oil cooler.

its actually an HEI distributor out of a Chevy Vega. Its some different stuff. Its actually the same distributor we're running in the vw buggy. It just gives more reliable spark and is a lot better with the turbo. You'd have to talk to my dad more about it, that's basically all i know. I just know it looks good. haha

yes. it has tabs at each mounting point to the car. The two to the fire wall for the main tube is actually just a big square plate with four bolts and a plate on the other side (future roll cage point) And the other four spots are just 1.5 inch by 3 inch by quarter pieces of flat steel with the pipe welded at one end and a hole for a bolt at the other end.

UPDATE 10/5/08:

I got my tail lights mounted today.
this is what they look like:

I also did a lot of hooking up wires to the right locations. I filled the motor full of oil and put a battery in to try and start it.

It started, has oil pressure, (the dummy light works and shuts off) it seems like its running fine, and all of a sudden, oil's going everywhere! it ended up blowing the rubber gasket out of the oil filter. So now we need to put a pressure regulator on it. It made a nice mess too. But atleast I got to hear it run. Smile

I got most of the interior of my car put in this weekend. It is still in need of a headliner but I'm not in an immediate hurry on it.

It does run and I have driven it a bit. It needs some work on the tranny; it pops out of second gear and is hard to get into 3rd. I'm replacing the shift rod bushing inside the tunnel today so maybe that will help.

here's some photos:

I got one of my air-scoops finished today. Along with the swirls and mounting.
I also got mounts made for my turn signal lights, and a tab for a flag for that future trip to the dunes.

hopefully I'll get to start driving it this week. If I'm really lucky I will get to drive it home tomorrow.

UPDATE 10-21-08
I got most, if not all, of the required things to be legal done today. (minus insurance and licensed)
I cleaned up all the wires and got full working lights front and rear.
I got the scoop over the oil cooler swirled and mounted.
I put the front end back on and have it ready to go.
and I finally started on my front bumper.
Here's some pictures:

We need to talk, maybe you can help me build a heat sheild for my baja. during the summer the hot air flows down over my tail pipe and into the radiator.

unfortunately I can't take all the credit on my car. My dad has been a major help on this project, and he was the one who allowed me to get my own VW (He has a Notch) He did the scoops. It was his idea, and his creation. I just mounted them and put the swirls on them.
But if you're at the Karl's show come talk to me, or my dad, Jimmy, as Tim says above. I'll have my car there and my dad will have his too.

In high school Jimmy had his Baja and Todd had one too. I still have my Duster from highschool. I also had a class with Jammie. She saved my skin once on a school report. she retyped in an hour what took me all week long. this was the days of electric typewriters. ou see the way I type now. think of what my report looked like with out all the electronic fix it stuff we have today...

Jimmy used to have some crazy 3 wheeler monster, does he still have it?

I'm assuming you'd be asking about the turbocharged corvair powered sand drag one with the quick change rear-end? If so, we still have it, the frame anyways. Its days are long over.
He does still have a three-wheeler though, a little less extreme. here it is:

not sure. the suspension will still be stock but I would love to. Who knows though. When it gets closer to then I'll decide, right now I'm just worried about just getting to drive it.

UPDATE 10/24/08

Today was my car's maiden voyage, and man it was a rough one. I did make it from point A to point B though. I blew a few fuses along the way (especially the one that works the fuel pump) but its fixed and I drove it home tonight. Got a few complements at the gas station and now its sitting in my driveway. Should have it fully registered Tuesday and I will hopefully have it at Sonic on Friday and Karl's on Sunday.

Very Happy

well I was thinking about it but then I realized it was halloween and now I doubt I'm going because of unfortunate circumstances this week. But I will be at Karl's and I will be at Sonic on the 7th and the show on the 9th.

Well my week has not been a great one to say the least. I've been very busy and the person my dad has been working with on insurance has a complete pain in the neck. She sounds like a real ditz to me. Anyways, if everything goes according to plan, I will be making that beloved trip to dmv and getting a license for my car. I will then be driving to my grandpa's shop in Tempe, hanging out for a bit, and then bringing the baja home and leaving the truck there. This weekend she'll see a lot of driving and we'll see if she holds up.

She's licensed and should now be my daily driver for good. (I will still have my truck for back up til its sold).

I got my front bumper finished and painted, and got 3 lights mounted on it. I also got one of those plastic fuel filler covers since my front end doesn't tilt.

See everyone at Karl's on sunday!

well, we'll see how well my tranny holds up. its just stock and it had problems with second gear even before I put a motor in and drove it. So far though I've been kinda easy on it, not droppin the clutch and runnin it balls to the wall when I'm taking off. I think if you're easy on it you could be okay. I'm also running low boost, so that makes things a little bit easier for the tranny.

hp I would guess somewhere between 120 and 180. Maybe more, I'm not sure. And torque I couldn't even guess. I'll probably never have it on a dyno but I know it screams if I get on it.

Its got insurance, but its just the minimums. It does have locking doors though, then again I really don't have anything inside of it at this point, no stereo or speakers.

My VW engine walked out of my baja late one night, That is why I have the Ford 2.3OHC in it. It was cheaper than a VW engine at that time and it's an easy 95+ HP in stock form with lots of torque.

You set up looks like it would be hard to take for a walk, lot of extra piping etc.

So today was the Karl's show. The swap meet was huge and I ended up getting a few things I wanted/needed for really cheap. Laughing
Including: window cranks, pedal pads w/ the VW logo, and an entire IRS rear clip w/ axles and cvs but minus tranny (which I already have).
this now means in December when my semester of school is over, I will be tearing the car apart and going to IRS. Until then I will start boxing in my arms, cleaning and painting things, getting new seals, boots and bushings, etc. and I'm gonna try to have it in by the new year.

well, since i sold my truck and still have money left over after paying off all the parts i've purchased over the past 4 years, new things will be coming for my baja, including:

new front wheels-most likely 4 or 5 inch wide polished Douglas wheels
new front tires-not sure, but anything better/rounder than mine is a must
new rear tires-31-10.50-15 BFG All-Terrains to be exact
Pioneer head-unit and installation of a stereo that's gonna be entirely disconnected and removed during off-road adventures
all necessary seals, boots, and other parts needed for my irs clip to put it in my car once December roles around and schools out

eventually i'll buy a roll cage, or the tubing to do a roll cage

and possibly a rag top, but i'm still unsure on that at the moment.

if everything goes to plan and i have my irs and roll-cage done, i'm taking it to the dunes for new years. Shocked

so this totally sucks. I hooked up the wastegate on my turbo yesterday, and as i left my shop to head to work, the turbo was whining and whistling really loudly. So we checked it out and basically the turbo is disintigrating. one of the blades is nicked and chunked so it makes absolutely zero boost now.

hopefully i can get it fixed soon, but I'm betting this dampens my chances of taking it to the dunes for thanksgiving.

so this means tomorrow i'm making it an n/a car. Crying or Very sad Evil or Very Mad Sad

i've actually been really easy on the drive train side of things. i haven't been launching too hard when leaving red lights and i haven't once spun the wheels since i've driven it either. its coming out hopefully in a month though so i can go irs. for now i just have to figure out how to change all the intake/exhaust tubing so it will work as n/a

well a few weeks ago I got some new wheels for the front of my car: 15x5.50, minimum offset Douglas aluminum wheels

I've held off on putting them on because I wasn't thrilled by the idea of my old, unround tires on my new pretty wheels so i've been waiting to get new tires.

I had my dad order me some tires today for it, in the form of those common 15x7.00 Nanco offroad tires.

Tomorrow I should have my new wheels and tires on my car. I'll post pictures then. Laughing

Oh, and still no turbo. Which sucks.

umm, i'm not completely sure cause my dad got them for me. i'm pretty sure he got them ordered from karl's and i know my cost was 67 per tire but thats without tax and shipping which is something i don't have to pay through my granpa's shop.

you might just call Karl's as they'll be able to give you you're price rather than the wholesale price.

here's some new photos of my baja as of this morning:

I got my new front wheels and tires on yesterday, and wow what a difference it makes in the overall look. I'm going to attempt to polish my rear wheels (satin finish centerlines) this weekend or the start of next. Anyone done this before? Got any suggestions?

yes its a cat. its my baffle for my stinger. unfortunately my turbo disintegrated and this was what we i had laying around that would bolt right on to my header.

in the garage is my brother, my dad and I's project jeep. Normally his 65 notchback would be there in the garage but he's doing some motor work on his car.

christmas was really good to me and my baja.

my parents bought me 15x7 Douglas wheels to match my 15x5.5 fronts, also since my centerlines were going to be a lot of work to polish.

then today, lucky for me i was able to pick up a 6 point bolt-together cage from a guy in glendale, and with a days work, painted it, and put it in. here's a few new photos:

Although i have the capabilities to fab my own cage, this was a much quicker route to take, and also cheaper.

next week i plan on converting my rear suspension to irs and have almost gathered all the parts.

the headliner (as you can see from the photos is sort of lacking) will be done within the next few weeks as well.

then its on to getting the roof painted, its still primered and i should be content for a while. Wink

its actually more of a headliner material, that gray tweed isn't cheap for that big of a piece.

And i will post a photo once the rear wheels are on. Once the IRS swap is done, the wheels will be put on along with a new set of 31x10.50. I really hate to buy a new set of tires just to wear the outside edge down.

well i've been working the past couple of days on converting my swing-axle baja to IRS
today i was able to finish the pivot mounts and get the arms, shocks, drums, stub axles, and break-lines hooked back up. I also got the transmission back in.

all that is left now is for a little bit of clearancing of the frame horns for the cv's at the transmission, axles can then go in, and the motor will go back in.
I should be driving it home friday and I'll have it at sonic next friday.

Here's some pictures so far, i'll post better ones once the car is home.

Also thanks to Bugzyla for allowing me to borrow his jig even though it wouldn't work on my car, and also a HUGE thanks to my dad for helping to make all of this possible. Laughing

THE IRS SWAP IS A SUCCESS!!!!

Got my axles and cv's put in this morning. bled the brakes and reinstalled the throw-out bearing.

bolted the motor right back up, and began tightening all the bolts and putting it back together.

once everything was good, checked to make sure i had all gears, and took it for a test drive. needless to say, the test drive was a bit exciting because the return spring for the carb came off and it went wide open. i fixed that and so far so good.

the tranny shifts perfectly, and it doesn't grind going into second like my swing axle tranny did.

i couldn't be happier with the way things went, the ride is so much smoother and is much stabler on the freeway. Laughing Laughing

here's some pictures of the final product:

And now there's no more crazy camber angles!

new tires and wheels will be on the rear next week.

almost like it had a muffler, just not as good.
its a little bit loud with the stinger, but the cat is acting as the baffle.
it will probably get a normal muffler back on it w/o a stinger soon, i hate worrying about rain and other stuff getting into it.

This weekend I finally decided to spend the time on finishing up the interior. I painted the rest of the inside blue, mainly around the back window and along the roof in the back half of the car.
Then i bought a section of carpet for the package tray area, mainly to help deaden some of the sound, and also to make it look a bit more aesthetically pleasing.
And then I installed the headliner. At first it was a PITA but i eventually got it figured out and in there.

All in all, none of its perfect, but it doesn't have to be show car quality, it just has to kill a bit of the sound, and i'm amazed at how well it does that.

Well, since I finally got my IRS done and everything seems to be okay, I got my new tires today. Very Happy

A set of 31x10.50x15 BFG All-Terrains on 15x7 (minimum offset) Douglas 6061 (.190 thickness) Aluminum Wheels.

They are a drastic change from the old Centerlines and 27 inch tires. Wink

I also had the chance to make some new knobs for the light switch and wiper switch. I will be making one for the ash tray hopefully tomorrow, and also some for the window cranks. Unfortunately I had to leave early to go to the "real" job this afternoon.

I haven't updated this thread in a while so rather than starting a new one here's the update.

So I spent some time yesterday finally making some nerf bars/steps for the roof rack on my baja. here's the final result:

the tach I had was old and slightly falling apart so I opted for a new one and this is what I ended up with:

Works perfectly and man is that shift light bright. Shocked

I also started fabbing up some new side mirrors. I was sick of the heavy, bulky plastic ones it had, so I'm making some tube-style ones.

I will weld in the strap that holds the mirror tomorrow, as well as round off the edges and paint them.

I post up the final product tomorrow.

I finished the mirrors yesterday morning.
I'm really pleased with them because I can actually see the car next to/behind me.

haven't updated in a while but i've been busy busy busy on this thing. the newest addition is a pair of fox 2.0 8.5 inch travel shocks for the rear. Kinda a pain to get in but once they were in i was happy. drives a lot better on the street and probably even better in the dirt.

i also added a floor jack with an aluminum skid underneath the front end.

and i made an aluminum cover for my e-brake handle

DEFINITELY. It's dusty as heck too, compared to sand. Fun place though.

yea its definitely more like a gravel. there are some places where the the rocks get pretty big, especially on the big hills. but there's really no sand in the whole place.

i thought this was pretty cool: Just a little over 2 and a half years ago i brought home my baja. and it was barely a baja to say the least. this weekend on the way to Volkstreffen we passed by the same spot where i took the first picture of my car on the trailer being towed home. so i stopped and took a picture of it as it sits now. What a difference! Smile

The way i see it its me and my dads father/son project, otherwise i just would of bought one built already! But thanks, its getting the finishing touches for it to be a running baja at Darryl's as we speak, you'll prolly see it there. And thanks, i must admit, youve done good work on yours, i use your build thread quite frequently as a motivator haha. Laughing

haven't done any updating in a while. been doing a lot of simple things lately, just the stuff that's needed to be done. on the heavier side of things i built new trailing arms, and also put in a new set of 28mm torsion bars.

Looking good, i have always liked the look of that yellow tint on lights. Ive seen it a bunch on lowered cars going for that "JDM" look.

been pretty busy working on the car, especially the last two days. upgraded to a 6 inch wider beam Smile

started with building new lower shock mounts on the lower arms:

then the install:

found out this stupid tube gets in the way if you're running a stock steering box, so i had to cut it out with the sawzall

finished buttoning everything up and finally had it back on its own weight

racing is probably going to have to wait until i can afford a second car, so that the baja doesn't have to be my daily driver. when that happens then i will get to work on getting everything race legal. until then its just going to be a fun car to take out on the weekends.

here's a little video from fridays run i put together:

Sycamore Run 12-23

picked up my axles today for the 3x3 swap. get them home and opened the box to check them out, they were bright red! so i started looking, the part number on the box differs from the part number on the axle. looked up the axle number and it matches the Sway-a-way part number. so looks like i might have ended up with a really good deal Smile

i now have everything to do the swap, so i'll be scheduling a day off of work and changing everything over the 1st weekend of july. should be fun

Tell us about what was behind the one photo? Also a little about the Magazine. For some of us not in the know.

the magazine is a vw mag based out of the UK called Hayburner. Originally the Porsche 356 drag car (blackbird) was getting a feature. They did some talking and then decided to put some other cars in as well. Big Buff, owner of the blackbird told all the GT guys to send in hi resolution photos of their cars and he would send them in, and then those at Hayburner would select which ones to put in the magazine. Apparently mine made the cut:)

started the swap today. i'm about ready to die. the heat/humidity today was killer. plus my car tried to kill me a few times while reindexing the torsions.
got the cvs all apart. arms are painted and ready to go. new limit strap installed on the driver side to replace the tearing one it had. down to putting the bearings and seals in the axles, reinstalling the brakes, put the cvs on the new axles and install them. and i'll be driving her home tomorrow. Smile

finished everything up today for the most part. of course i got rained on while doing so...i thought it never rained in AZ...
everything went back together fairly smoothly. of course, let the car back down on its own weight and realized i didn't need to reindex the torsions, sits way too high as you can see in the pictures. so i'll go back down a spline to where it was before and see how it is. should be perfect. other than that it rides nice, the camber should be a lot less once its sitting lower.

It looks real good. To bad you have to do all the reindexing. Just be careful and use a safety chain so it cant get away form you. Let us see it when she is setting back down.

i bought the parts and kinda pieced it together. got the arms, bushings, bearings and seals from a friend who bought a car and the parts came with said car. the axles and spacers for the stub axles were purchased from Tim at Go Go Performance in Cave Creek. Everything else was already on the car.

The arms gave your car some rear legs Grass Hopper...Looks good.

I know with my car the rear tires would get into the fenders. I had to remove them when I went off roading. I now have High body mount fenders on the car no vs the lower mount fendars.

yeah we'll see what mine do. i think now that changed the way they fit and form to the body i should be okay. i might also rotate them forward towards the nerf bars so that they offer a little bit more protection to the side of the body. but if i rip one off i'll figure something different out.

finally got some new axles. after breaking 3 cvs in 2 months i was kinda over the whole cv thing. so these are what were installed instead:

also made some adjustable clevices and added new limit straps.

the new axles fit 930 flanges, so if i happen to come across a good deal on 930s and axles, i might pick some up, but for now these are gonna work.

also got some new harnesses for christmas. 3 inch shoulders with sewn in pads, 3 inch laps, and anti-submarine belts.

The axles are made by a company called Extreme Fabrication out of California. We've had these axles for a while after my dad picked them up for a Benjamin. There start at $1400 new and go up from there.

Those would be the ones I looked at too. The price was out of my range at that point. How do you like them so far?

The only thing I don't like is at low rpms they want to vibrate just like a driveshaft tends to. Other than that no complaints yet

While most are complaining about it being too hot to do anything, I've had the car out the past 3 weekends now. played at butcher jones the first weekend. played at sycamore the second weekend, and did bulldog canyon from Usery pass rd. over to the 89 about a mile north of the lost dutchman state park.

here's a video i put together from the day at sycamore:

Sycamore Creek, AZ 7/20

Yes, too hot. Well, and Baja is in pieces.

We ran Bulldog yesterday in the Jeep. Met a guy who carts water out to water the "sacred beer trees." At least now I know where they are.

Thanks for the video. Looks like fun.
