Hey, I am a new member. I need input on installing a 6" wider front beam. I do not want to put the car down for long, so I need all of the parts and information before I have to "figure it out". I want to purchase a "warrior" beam. 8" or 10" for moderate desert off road? I will run a "stock gearbox" for ease of installment. I know I can get extended tie rod kits for the beam. Any tips on front brake hoses? Any proven shock set-up? Anyone have to cut alot of sheet metal for the shocks to "pop-up" or will the increased width of the beam keep me out of trouble? Can I run 7.00x15 fronts without "hang up" on locked turns under full compression? I have a really cool "bug eye" kit and do not want to ruin the overall "retro" appearance of my '64. Will the wide front look silly with the short rear swing axle suspension(torsions bars have been preloaded). Also, what front supports will I need for moderate off-road strenght WITHOUT removing the stock tank? Sorry about the novel, but my aim is to keep our sport alive and I will pass on all information to my fellow "border" desert runners.

Use super beetle front hoses, they are long enough for a 6" wider beam. You shouldnt have to cut anything on the sheet metal at all. You may have to trim the fenders if you have longer shock towers. You can run the 7.00-15 tires with no clearance issues with a 6" wider beam, and all of the steering stops removed (mine turns on a dime Mr. Green ). If you run a 7.00-15 in the front with a standard backspacing wheel, and a 8" or 10" wheel in the rear with minimum back spacing, the car should look fine. The type of supports you use will depend on if you have a cage in the car or not.

Thanks for the quick response P.R. I an truly honored! The only "cage" I have is the EMPI bolt in 4 pont, but the body seems very stout-dispite its age. My new wife and my step daughter really enjoy the car. We also put it though the rough stuff out here on the border. I will try to submit a pictue soon. I have had several "budget" off-road buggies and the 7.00x15's handled like it was on rails in the "caliche" and sand terrain.(similar to your terrain?) This will be my next upgrade. I am still trying to "iron out" my new EMPI HPMX40 on my new 1835. I will soon be posting QandA and reviews on this engine/carb combo. So far it has been a real challenge. I am getting the "bug" to build an all out long travel desert beater-no glass-no tiltle-to compete in the "run what 'ya brung" Mexican off road races. 'Til then, hit the dirt! Thanks, '64 Desert Dude
