A guy I work with is getting new tires for his Jeep and said I could have the old ones... free. The tread is nothing to write home about and there are tiny cracks between the treads - but MUCH better shape than what I have now (L78-15's).
Reviewing the forums it seems most are running 30 or 31" tires. I have stock length arms and a probably stock 1600 DP with a progressive carb.
Do you think this is too much tire for this setup? If so, anybody interested in the tires before I tell him I can't use them? It will be a few weeks before they come off the Jeep.
Thx

I would say too tall, too wide to fit and too tall to spin well.

I have 33s on Bugzyla, but I have the benefit of the bus reduction trans in it to give me the 5:13 final drive to spin them, not to mention the 3" body lift for clearance.

The Ernest baja project has 33s on it also, it also has a 3" body lift for tire clearance, and a 002 bus IRS trans to help turn them, as well as a stout 1915 motor.

I put 33s on the back of my rail with a stock 1600 SP and a 73 & later freeway flyer trans and it had no torque to climb hills, so I went back to 30x9.50s.

I'm running 33x10.50's on mine, with a bus trans and 1915. I'm actually glad mine aren't any wider- I think that added contact area (width) adds an extra element of rolling resistance.

Shoot- if all it's gonna cost you is a mount/balance, I say give 'em a try!

also i think if they are over 31" in diameter, they are going to hit the torsion housing... that is if you have stock length arms

If you have the stock IRS torsions with the nub sticking out of them the 33s WILL hit. You will have body/fender clearance issues if you dont have a body lift, 3" works best.

I have run 33 12.50 with a swing with 4.12 rp stock 1.2 gearing and 1.58 1.12 3rd and 4th gearing with a strong off road single carb 2180 but had wider trailing arms to clear the body. A Bus IRS with 5.38 RP and stock gearing will make it work for a smaller strong engine. I did this with a 1776 engle 130 cammed engine. Less motor will negate the benefits of the larger tires. My 1835 with a VZ 15 cam in a 1500 lb rail moves them but is not real happy about it. It won't pull 3rd in sand for long and forget about 4th in sand. If you do have enough motor and strong enough axles/cvs you would be better to stick with 30 or 31 inch tires. When i switched from 235/70 15s to 30s on my rail and Baja it started spitting T-1 cvs (1835) and snapping stock swing axles (2180). When the BAJA and rail still only cost me a grand for the pair the small engine and tires went 90% of the places I go now. I am running 33's on them now and it wasn't cheap making everything else strong enough for 33's.
