i have a random question kinda.
i was wondering why everyone goes to bus trans. and why not just keep a bug trans.
i know that the gearing ratio is different but you can change ratios in a bug also.
just thought i would ask.

If you are running anything up to a mild 1835 you can run a bug trans uaually with no probs if you dont beat on it too hard. If you plan on beating it or putting a hi HP motor behind it you better think about a bus trans because it will hold up to the abuse/hp better.

My dad says its fairly easy to lose a gear in a bug trans (unless its rebuilt)

I know my reverse gear will be out in the next year. or more hopefully. Sometimes it doesnt like to go into reverse as easy, but it wont pop out.

In the Baja Bugs & Buggies book there is a topic on this, they have pics of both wich gives a good idear of the dimensions. Not that I have any experience on this but it looks stronger (bigger = stronger?)

Well, there's really no "kinda" about it. IF the Type I (bug) transmissions were sufficient, VW would have put them in production Type IIs (buses), don't ya think? Since the trans in a bus is subject to more strain, mainly from pushing more weight around EVERY time you turn the key on, they (VW) determined that a Type I trans was inadequate for that application. Soooo, although you won't often hear me proclaiming to be absolutely correct about ANYthing, I'm very comfortable making this statement, which I feel is based on fact at this point- BUS TRANSMISSIONS ARE MORE DURABLE THAN BUG (IRS) TRANSMISSIONS.

Will a bug trans be enough for you? Try it and find out, because that's the only way you'll ever know for sure.

Thank you- I'll be here all week. Laughing

I'm glad you started this thread 333. I've been curious about some aspects of this after doing some online research. 1st, I believe one of the BIG differences is HYPOID R&P vs NON-HYPOID R&P, I believe the T2 is a hypoid R&P. Hypoid is inherently stronger because, regardles of the ratio, a hypoid R&P will always have more gear mesh at any time. Everything being beefier is the no-brainer part. However, Jake Raby's (who seems to have a superb reputation) MassIVe 4 site says they have T1 trannys ( & &#%^%$% torque biasing diffs too!!!$$$ ) to handle monster motors, and they're not too terribly expensive. I'd be interested in hearing some of the more knowledgable of you weigh in on this one. After all, if a T1 CAN be built to handle big torque, being lighter - & easier to mount in a Baja - is a big plus in my book. Zyla? Anybody?

Why don't you buy my baja, jump it and find out if the trans holds up to abuse? Very Happy

The BUG ring gear is 6+" and the BUS ring gear is 8", the pinion shaft is larger in the BUS also, the case is stronger in the BUS but a gussett on the BUG works well also. The gearset (1st throught 4th) are the same in the BUS and the BUG, year for year, EXCEPT the 091 and 094 BUS trans where they went bigger on everything. Make sense?
