well im back in good ol' kansas and have already found another job, so its time to do some repairs on the bug, but i have some questions.

where do i hook up the transmission ground strap?

i have a ground wire running from one of the bolts that hold the engine to the trans, to the body. so would thta work as the ground strap, or do i still need to hook the other one up?

and last, would it be best if i just patch up the rust on the heater channels(on the outside, and lots of it), or just replace the whole thing?


let me know what you guys think.

Traditionally the eng/ trans ground strap runs from the rear torsion bar trans mount to the transaxle. I hope I understood your question.
Just patching them is faster. At sometime they will need replacing.

Welcome back!
Depends on how cold it gets in Kansas whether you do the whole thing(heaater channel va. repair) or not, plus money and time. It can get pretty damn cold here in Va so I went for the whole shebang since the body was off the pan. Luckily only the one side was needed for mine.
Not sure about the ground strap. It's got me a wondering now. Since I went with a total wire job from Watsons. I dont know if I saw any thing in the kit for that. I would imagine a good braided strap from the tranny to the frame (torsion as already suggested) would be fine.

well, i got the ground stap on there, but now i dont even have power coming out of the coil. replaced the coil, and still the same thing. i am totaly stumped. i am about to break down and take it to a shop(wich i dont want to do). any advice would be welcome.

Grab an asistant this will take 5 minutes to diagnois. Do the points open and close? Is the gap set? You should have 12 volts at terminal 15 while cranking and with the key on. Terminal 1 should only have the green wire from the distributor going to it. (Exception would be a tach wire or electronic ignition wire.) You can turn the engine until the points close. With a small screwdriver with the tip taped you can open the points and see if you have spark with the key on.
Dirty point contacts, bad condenser, open in green condensor wire, broken braided ground wire in distributor are problems you could have. Since its been sitting a while I suspect corroded, dirty points. The Bentley manual for your year VW will be the best tool you will ever buy.
