the 59 is still a "swinger". it has a 1973 engine bolted up to a mid 60's trans. i have the 73 irs in the garage that came with the 73 engine. wanna install it for me?!?!?!?! Very Happy

retro fitting is a polite term for sex change Laughing
no really, you have to remove the whole rear kit and kaboodle (engine, trans, tortion) to convert.

link pins is the type of front end you have. early bugs had link/ king pins, later bugs had ball joints (b/j's).

i do believe that the 69 is b/j (anyone? am i correct?).

You more than likly have the ball joint front and the IRS rear.

Link pin beams seem to be stronger and better for off road.
IRS rears seem/are to be the best handling for off road use.

Swing axles are stonger and less likly to brake during hard off road use.

IRS have 2 ruber boots on eac end of the Half shafts covering your CV joints. You can see the reae axle.

Swing axles have one larg rubber boot next to the transaxle. You can not see the axl as it is covered by the outer tube of the swing axle.

It's all trade off's the only real bad part that I would chuck is the ball joint front end. no ral plus for running this set up other than it come with the car. Swing vs IRS both have good and bad points, I have run them both.

thanks to both of you for the info, the bug is in the shop getting a cheap engine installed so can't go check now, will get some pics soon, i traded some elec. work for the 69 bug, the value of the work was about $400.00
but the bug came with no eng. i think i got the better part of the deal!
i had it towed to a local vw shop and they had a basic motor on a stand in the shop for $500.00 installed, it sounded like a good deal so there on it, i never had a bug or even wanted one till i saw this thing just sitting there in the high desert in this guys back yard, it grew on me instantly, i can't wait to drive it, you all are an invaluable source of info, thanks again, and so far havent found the need to be retro fitted Laughing

I found years ago that swing axles flip easier. It seems the edge of your tire catches in a slide. Cost me a week in the hospital when i was 17.

So if I am understanding correctly it is easier to convert from swing arm to IRS than converting ball joint to Link pin front end? After you weld in the IRS brackets is it a matter of just bolting the IRS in?
I am going to be in the market for a Baha pretty soon and I want to make sure I get what I want. I have no experience with bugs so I am trying to suck up as much info as I can so I can make the best choice.
Can anyone explain to me or direct me to a web site, what the difference is between Class 1,2,3 bugs? Is one class better than the other?
Can anyone recomend a good Baha manual or book?
I found this site 2 days ago and am amazed at all the info that is on here. This is a great site!!! Thank you all for any help. Kevin

Here's another question. Is an IRS conversion something I can pay a shop to do for me, and how much am I talking about? Or is this a do it yourself project? I have no welding skills...yet. I'm trying to decide if I should go with the link pin front end or the IRS rear end. Trying to narrow down what year of VW I am looking for.

You have IRS, Look for 2 ruber CV boots on each side and the axle rotatats with the tire. Swing you have 1 large boot at the trans and the Axle is inside a metal tube that will not rotate.

It sounds like from what I am reading that it would be best to have the link pin front end and the IRS rear end all on the same vehicle. But in order to have that I will have to convert either the front or the rear. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to do that. Should I get one that has the link pin front end and convert the swing axle to IRS or get a newer bug with the IRS and convert the ball joint front end to a link pin front end. OR... not worry about having both the IRS rear and link pin front and settle for one or the other, but.... which one is best to have if you have to choose one? Oh, and thanks for your quick responses.

Both of the conversions cost money and involve welding. To convert to irs, you need donor parts....trans, trailing arms, spring plates, axles w/cv joints; and then weld the conversion brackets on.

To convert the front to link pin, there are 4 ways as listed on the sambe forums:
1, cut off the frame head and weld on a link pin frame head.
2, cut off the frame head and weld in supports to hold the beam and attach to the roll cage.
3, cut off the top of the frame head, mount the beam and weld in supports for the upper part of the beam to the roll cage.
4, buy a custom made conversion beam from bugzilla when he starts manufacturing them.
All these require a complete new front suspension, beam, leaf spring packs, trailing arms, spindles etc.

My car is a 66, so I will do both. irs comversion and run with the ball joints until something breaks or have saved up enough for the custom front end.

I am a baja virgin but have read a lot and asked a lot of questions, but most people say depending on intended use answers how much you need to modify.

My intended use is going to be a daily driver to and from work. I would also like to be able to take it off-road, and maybe even some dunes. I'm starting to lean towards 1970 and later to get the IRS rear end. Then working my way forwards to the front end later on. What do you think? Thanks.
