i was heading home yesterday when smoke began to pour out of my steering column, i quickly grabbed a bottle of water that was in the cab and put it out, but my poor bug is now crippled Sad i had to have it towed home and it's sitting in front of my house just waiting for me to fix it.

gave me one heck of a scare but no one was hurt and there is no real damage, i plan to take the column apart and repair the singed wireing and whatever else i find that doesn't look right. probably won't get to it 'till sunday though. BUSY BUSY WEEK!

I recommend you take a triple dose of patience prior to, and during the job. Melted wires are just a joy to work on.

Turn signal switch, $40 Part number 311-953-513B

Electrical part of the ignition switch $17 part number 311-905-865A

At least its not too expensive.

well at this point i can put the bug on hold, FINALLY!
i'm getting a highway legal scooter, about 250cc from HONDA on Saturday morning which will be my new daily driver, so now that i don't NEED to drive the bug everywhere i can start working on it properly, STARTING WITH A NEW WIREING HARNESS!

I'll keep you all posted on it's situation but right now, I'M LATE FOR WORK! Shocked so i'll type at you all later!

Bummer.

Be glad the smoke wasn't coming from the engine area, though. It could have been worse! You could have had a complete and total loss!

my 58 bug caught fire under the hood at the girlfriends house one day. Being 17 and so mature, I got pissed, left it to smolder and walked home(2 miles). Towed it home the next day and paid dear ol' Dad 25bucks to repair it. This when I was bringing home 65 a week. Took him about 15 minutes....and he wouldn't renegotiate.
I've stripped out harness and rewired either stock or custom looms several times since then. Lesson learned.

UPDATE ON FIRE:

found the reason for the fire the other day, the main power wire going into my Coil came in contact with my fan shroud which caused the wire to catch fire, so the fire traveled from the coil to my steering column! Shocked i'm lucky the whole dern thing didn't go up right there!

I had my master cylinder short out and set on fire when i was camping on the rim, i hit to many mud puddles. I thought my gas tank fuel line was a gonner but i spit water onto it and got my battery disconected.

After you fix the wires consider adding a fuseable link wire to the power supply wire.

triple noted, that was the plan. if there was an in-line fuse in the first place the fire never would have happened.
