When its 120 in Phoenix the only sane thing to do is get out of town.
The VW camp out in Flagstaff was the first choice. I needed the 2180 for the highway grades. One CHEVY rod bolt felt gimpy when tightened.

Now poop really starts to run down hill. On the forty mile ride on I-10 to drop off the 2387s case and 2180s rods the 1835 ping on pump 91 octane. 20% race gas helped. Then the #140,145 and #150 Zenith main jets were nowhere to be found. In went a set of 155s instead of the 135s. It was decided to go lake hopping. Starting with Sahauro Lake then over Four Peaks Road (dirt forestry road) to Roosevelt, Apache and Canyon Lakes. After reading about the event this was a better choice.
4.30 am load up the rail.
5 am. Saturday out comes the cooling fan. It sounded broken but it was not hitting and was not worn or cracked.
6 am Basha's for ice, soda, water, 4 burritos for breakfast and lunch.
8 am Swimming in the lake after driving to Sahauro Lake from the backside through Four Peaks Road after being detoured 8 miles since the Bush Highway to 87 north bound on ramp no longer exists. I should of just taken 87 but I wanted the Phoenix sign. To rip off Buddy Holly In summer happiness is Phoenix in the rear view mirror.

Now do you remember where you left your truck last night?

The abandoned Cotton Wood Ranch.

This trail was rough enough for the ice to pulverize the 3lbs of grapes in the cooler. Cold green grape flavored ice water.[/IMG]

After swimming at every beach cove that was not occupied it was back to Four Peaks.
A wrong turn put use back at the Bush Highway another 8 mile detour. A sheriff had just gone down the trail after we came out and I decided passing him would not be prudent. The wrong turn resulted in finding a couple of rails whose owners were going to go with us until they realized plates were needed. Later I wished they had plates. Nice entry level rail and old prerunner.

At noon half way across Four Peaks the fuel consumed running rich, beach hopping and detouring resulted in a fuel crisis. After 45 minutes finally someone had some spare fuel to sells. I should of tried the smaller main jet and brought the 155 jet with me. I estimate mileage was down 3-5 mpg.

Unfortunately it was unleaded regular and the overworked 1835 began pinging. New Plans.
Fountain Hills for fuel, water, ice, etc., then McDowell Mountain Park for a swim in the Verde River. Left the tank a gallon low and went in search of race gas, Everyone said Scottsdale. It is now two and daylight is burning. Once at McDowell Park the sign states a permit is required to leave a vehicle unattended. Nearest place to buy a permit is 20 miles away. No swim. Now down the wash to Bartlett.

Its none stop soft sand all the way from the Park to Bartlett about 15 miles in a straight line but at least 25 to 30 with all the twists. Without the close ratio gears of my old swing the 33" tires were working the 1835 extra hard. Without race gas it would not pull out if it started to bog. Fourth gear was useless. Bartlett Marina sells parking passes $6.00 and cans of soda for $1.25 each. I was afraid to ask about fuel.

The water in the Verde was actually cool. The road to Horseshoe runs along the Verde. Most of the side trails were closed.

Time was against us when we got to Horseshoe Dam and the rail was low on fuel again. Being 5:30 and the rail not having directionals it was time to head to Care Free (an ultra wealthy town with a 35-25 mph speed and 80 decibel sound limit) for fuel and a good 50 mile ride home. As luck would have it we picked up another sheriff for a tail who stayed with us the 19 miles to Care Free which would not be a big deal except the rail is Speedo less. I guess my speed estimating was good. Got gas at the Shell station who sold 100 and 110 racing fuel. To late now. It had been dark for about 20 minutes before we got home. I figure we did 300 miles in 14 hours.
Now if someone can help me pick a line to the top of this one.
