How low must the alternator output be to trip the dummy light?

Im not too sure, but i think it is when you are using more amps or voltage that what is being created by your generator or alternator. or when it is below 12.5 volts ??????

Interesting question. Why do you ask?

I'm not absolutely positive, but I think the answer is 0 amps. I'm pretty sure the dummy light only comes on when you're not charging at all.

I had a dead battery on wednesday. I got a new one in, started the car and was only running at 12.5v even while revving. My light doesn't come on. However, the light does seem to work properly at other times. It comes on right when I turn the ignition on until the car is running. It comes on when I shut the car off for a second while the motor finishes turning. But it has never come on running at such a low voltage.

I would think you have an alternator problem- specifically voltage regulator setting. My low voltage light comes on when I start the car, and stays on until the first time I blip the throttle. What kind of voltage do you show with the engine running and headlights on (and off-road lights if you have any)? If it's less than 12v, you're going to be sucking your battery down again at night.

It turns out it is the brushes. My neighbor just happened to have an old alternator laying around. I pulled the brushes out of mine and compared to his. His were a bit longer. I put them in and now I get just over 13V while running.

Where can I order a new set of brushes?

I would think they'd be fairly easy to find at a good local auto parts store. If not, I'm sure you could fine them on the net.
