So I leave work at lunch for a 3 mile rip down the freeway for a run to the taco shop. I get back, roll in the gate, and just as I get to the last security bump I hear a clunk, and now the throttle does nothing. I figure it popped out of gear...but shifting does nothing. Clutch feels right, WTF?

Amazingly, I coast into my parking spot s l o w l y...and turn it off. I look at the shift linkage, I figure the coupler popped. Nope...the hockey stick must be engaging. Hmmm.

So I poke my head underneath just in case, and what do I see?

ALL 6 ALLEN BOLTS ON THE LEFT INNER CV JOINT WORKED LOOSE. Shocked The CV and axle were just resting on the frame horn with a bunch of grease, where it had been rotating as I slowly coasted through the parking lot.

HOLY CRAP. I had moments before been going 65 mph on the freeway. If that last thread on that last bolt had let go then, I would have had an axle and CV joint tied to the hub FLAILING my entire left trailing arm area, including brake likes, heads, exhaust, then flying down the freeway when it finally beat itself free, possibly through someone's windshield.

I didn't even lose or bend any of the bolts. I reassembled it and drove home this afternoon.

Man, I am one lucky dude. Period. What were the odds of that happening? I have been told I have freakish good luck by more than one person on more than one occasion. I am starting to believe it.

I'm lockwiring those some bidges.

Be warned...proper preventive maintenance is essential. The bear is,I was just under there looking around a couple days ago, and I do check them when I am down there...I am not kidding.

Whew. I'm a little freaked out.

Jeff

The CVs and boots look new, maybe the previous owner just tightened them, but didn't hit the 25 ft pounds, or who knows?

Either way, I will be lockwiring all of them!

Good insight for all ditch, glad you're OK. I had a similar experience once, but I won't jack your thread. It can be quite hair raising. Be very thankful. Someone must be looking after you!

If you would start a thread on how you safety wired them, not easy to do for those who have never properly safety wired before. Also drilling holes in the bolts should be a hoot to. I got lazy and used regular lock washer and blue locktite. Ya dodged a bullet on this one.

The same thing happened to a D3 guy (hotsauce) on the way to BOR, real fun to fix on the side of I-10. Redneck ingenuity won out to get it there for further repairs. I'll be keeping a 12pt in my car for every drive.

Share your story, '57. This thread isn't about me, it's about SAFETY!

Leather, I hear you on the bolt drilling. I will try to source some pre drilled bolts....maybe I'll get lucky. Otherwise, I will be buying several drill bits for the drill press. That will be a FUN job.

WaBaja....keep an eye on my build page. I will be doing tires next, then the great Warrior beam fiasco begins! +6 wider, +4 longer...

...and plus $1000 expensiver.

Jeff

You can get the pre-drilled bolts here:

Would love to learn how to properly seize the bolts if someone would like to share.

I will do a tutorial with photos when I do it. It's pretty simple - if you have a safety wire pliers. In fact, without one, it will be quite a pain. The concept is that you gang 2 bolts together so that the wire is pulling the 2 so that they can not move in the loosening direction.

Thanks for the lead on the bolts!!

Jeff
